Anyone remember this guy?
obsessed with star trek repeatedly writing themselves into a corner by creating alien races that are supposed to be The Bad Guys when that explicitly conflicts with their previously established notion that no group of people is inherently good or evil.
first it was the klingonsâtheyâre originally supposed to be this cruel, bloodthirsty, war-obsessed peopleâand then tng comes along and itâs like wait no maybe war and violence is a part of their culture and actually ties back to ancient traditions and philosophies so we have to be woke about it.
hey these are the ferengi and theyâre supposed to represent everything we hate about capitalist society; theyâre greedy, scheming, profit-obsessed, and they look like ugly little trolls to emphasize how much we fucking HATE capitalism. oh wait fuck here comes deep space nine and we have to recognize that theyâre PEOPLE. okok what if the pursuit of profit is actually part of their culture and ties back to ancient traditions and philosophies. so we have to be woke about it.
this is the borg, theyâre a hivemind race of cyborgs who have no sense of individuality and their only motivation is assimilating people into their society. they want to assimilate humanity and we are completely defenseless against them because their technology is eons ahead of our own and theyâre incapable of being reasoned with. oh sweet we have a borg prisoner this is the perfect opportunity to commit genocide against them. fuck actually we canât commit genocide weâre woke and communists and in space.
hey these are the cardassians, theyâre part of a cruel and vicious empire which is supposed to be a representation of fascism and authoritarian regimes, theyâre a cold, bloodthirsty people with no sense of empathy or compassion, their society literally references 1984 on multiple occasions, and theyâre known for the insanely cruel and inhumane methods of torture they use against their prisoners of war. we hate the cardassiansâŠâŠ.. except, hereâs a cardassian kid who grew up on bajor, andâŠâŠ. fuck. heâs a person. now we actually have to consider his humanity. and being racist is actuallyâŠâŠ. bad.
this is the jemâhadar, theyâre genetically engineered soldiers who have no sense of individuality and only live to defend the state. theyâre all born addicted to a synthetic drug thatâs manufactured by the state and administered by their mastersâthis is how theyâre kept subservient. theyâre ruthless and powerful and theyâre incapable of being reasoned with because their only motivation is violence and killing. so we should kill them all, right? FUCKâŠ.. what if theyâre actually people. goddamnit. now we have to consider their humanity.
hey these are the romulans. hey these are the founders. the list goes on. i just find it really interesting
#wordy#star trek#the death of the Crystalline Entity was one of those formative moments for childhood media for me#because in every appearance up till then the CE had only EVER appeared as a menace#it was a terrible force of nature that would ruthlessly destroy all it touched#it's portrayed as mindless alien and utterly inhuman#and had killed many living people#and yet. the crew of the Enterprise set out to try to reach out to it.#they said 'maybe it's sentient in some way we don't understand.'#they said 'maybe it doesn't know it's hurting us.'#they said 'maybe we can make contact.'#they said 'we have to try. at the least we have to try'#and they try! and for a moment it seems like they might be getting through!#and then one of the specialists brought along for the mission murders it#in an act of revenge for her own murdered child.#and you're left with this sense of tragedy. there's been too much death. was it worth it? did it help?#and now we'll never make contact with the crystalline entity. we'll never know what might have been in its mind.#that path is closed to us forever and we just have to live with that.

How the yandere bowers gang protects you
Warnings: sexual assault, revenge porn, physical abuse, murder, gore, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, manipulation, fucked up dynamics, forced relationships, MDNI
I do not intend to romanticise or normalise any of the themes I write about, I use them simply for entertainment value and do not encourage the replication of these actions!
Henry bowers:
You never really expected any aspect of Henry to be protective
You assume the hands that lay countless bruises on your skin to be the ones to shield you from the ruthless touch of others
But below the surface, thereâs a part of Henry that yearns to hide you away from the ugliest parts of the world
Even if he himself is one of the ugliest aspects of your life
He pushed that part of himself down for the sake of keeping his composure while correcting you
He canât go soft on you and allow disrespect now can he?
But there was always a firmness in the rule of never visiting his home
You assumed it was because he was embarrassed of you and didnât want you to meet his father, when in actuality it was quite the opposite
But belch had dropped you off in a hurry at Henryâs when the rest of the group was out of commission and he had to get home quickly, and you couldnât avoid the bowers residence
You knocked on the door only to be greeted by Henryâs father, who stared at you leeringly and suddenly you felt like a lost lamb backed into a corner by a rabid dog
Oh, how much did Henryâs gaze replicate his fathers in certain lights
When Henry saw the scene of his father looking at you with the look of an overjoyed dog at the sight of fresh meat, his mind couldnât stop but to wonder about his mother
Suddenly, he felt like that helpless child watching his mother squirm and scream no as a the male embodiment of terror beat her and ripped her clothes
He felt the urge to run to you, to hide you in his chest and stroke your hair that he loved so much all while reassuring you that everything was okay
Like he wanted someone to do to him when he was a child
But instead, he responds in the only language that he could speak with his father as he yelled at him while pushing him away
He positioned himself in front of you as he purposely angered his abuser in order to distract his wandering gaze to you
He screamed at you to go home, allowing you to be alone for the first time in months out of desperation
You returned to your home and oddly enough, you couldnât remember how to act normally in your own home
Your life was a constant performance of survival, how were you supposed to act while the curtain to your theatre were momentarily shut?
You just sat for hours on the couch and listened out for the next command or for your next warning and reprimand
For hours, just sat as still as a statue with tense shoulders as you awaited the next performance
You eventually went to bed around the same time that the boys would, much later then you did before them but for some reason their schedules had merged with yours and overtaken your thoughts
Henry entered your home a few hours before sunrise and creeped into your room
He was battered and bruised as he looked down at you in your bed, you couldnât help but think about all the times he had left you in a similar state to try and ease your misplaced sympathy
You assumed heâd punish you for your rule break, but he just slowly climbed into your bed and laid his head on your chest
He commanded your hands to stroke his hair and for you to reassure him
Small tears escaped his eyes and wet your shirt as he commanded you to tell him that he was nothing like his father, that he was a better man
The lies felt like acid on your tongue as you reassured him quietly until he fell asleep
Henry was too far gone to ever understand that he didnât break the cycle, he replicated it perfectly
Patrick Hockstetter:
You had been weird lately, Patrick had noticed
You had always been mopey and sad, but lately you were downright depressed
You neglected your personal appearance as you refused to eat or care for yourself in any way
This had caused Patrickâs attraction to you fade slightly, and that would not do in Patrickâs eyes
His sexual attraction was the only real feeling he felt, and it was his one true connection to you in terms of outside of his obsession
So Patrick decided to do some digging
He had found that some girls from school had been harassing you daily for the last few weeks during the few times you were without them
They had taken your clothes when you were changing in the ballet studio and had ruined the clothes you had handmaid, leaving you in only a towel
Luckily belch lended you his shirt but your humiliation lasted for days
The harassment didnât stop there, they would put sharp tacs in your ballet shoes, loosened a balancing pole so that youâd fall when using it, called you all sorts of names
Now Patrick didnât particularly care about your general well-being, as shown by his abusive and enabling behaviours
But when something affects his attraction to you, then it becomes a problem for Patrick
And you being in this depressive mood definitely affected his attraction, so Patrick took matters in his own hands
He decided to use what he knew and slept with each of the girls, roughly and painfully but with consent which was a curtesy he never offered you, before taking pictures of them on his camera and having the pictures developed
After a night of his usual forceful abuse, he showed you the pictures as some sort of twisted aftercare
The photos made you feel physically ill as you asked him why
He claimed he was protecting you, that those girls wouldnât bother you now
All a lie, his motives were completely selfish
You cried at the pictures and he assumed you were jealous, so he assured you that heâd fix it
The next day he spread the pictures across the school, forcing the girls to isolate themselves out of humiliation
Patrick assumed the problem was fixed now and told you that you owed him
Despite the heavy guilt in your gut, you couldnât help but find enjoyment in the fact the girls presence was no longer constant
Victor criss:
Victor was an observant guy, especially when it came to you
He memorised everything he could about you
He knows your routines, your preferences, your anxietyâs and your expressions
And he knew the minute that one of the male ballet teacher helped you stretch by grabbing at your thigh, that you were extremely uncomfortable
At first he tried to brush it off as a misreading of the situation, simply not knowing enough about a ballerinas strict routine
But he definitely did not misread the situation when he came to pick you up one afternoon and saw you cornered by your teacher with a look of absolute fear on your face
You practically ran to vic and held on to him tightly as you lead him out the building, something that only confirmed your fear as you usually repulsed away from his touch
He prodded you for answers but you became snappy with him and as he was about to reprimand you, he saw the tears that were close to streaming down your face with any more pressure
Vic was enraged
who was this piece of shit to touch you? Does he not know your owned? Does he not know your bowers gang property? Did he not realise that you were victors property?
Vicâs mind is made up as he drops you off with belch before making his way back to the ballet studio
He used your teacher as a pin cushion as he used his switch blade over and over and over until vic finally felt he had gotten his message through
He cut the hands off individually before skinning them and keeping the bones and hiding them away
He informed the rest of the bowers gang and they helped him stuff the body with rocks and watched it sink to the bottom of the river, never to be found again
They didnât question him, they didnât question his brutality, they just helped him clean up his mess
The same as what heâd do for them
Vic never told you what happened to your ballet teacher, but you inferred it from the context clues of the bones under his bed and the hidden away bloody clothes
All he asked for in return was a kiss and to be able to hold your hand without you looking sick
You tried your best
Belch Huggins:
Thereâs something surprisingly soft in belchâs protection
Heâs the biggest in the group and most assumed to be violent, but heâs the softest out of the boys
His protection can range from small thin to big things
He expresses his protection in many different ways
He covers the side of the table if your grabbing something from underneath it, he walks on the side of the sidewalk closet to the road, he holds you hands or your clothes in public places to keep track of you
He even protects you in the gang sometimes by positioning himself slightly in front of you in a group setting, taking the blame for your mistakes and distracting the others from your actions
But there is always going to be a dark side to belch
And that dark side was brought out specifically by some drunk grabbing at you harshly on the walk home, not knowing belch was with you
Belch felt iron hot fury in his veins as he looked at the scene of this drunk bastard grabbing you so hard it could probably bruise your skin
Your a goddess in belchâs eyes, a slice of heaven bestowed upon earth and something he can indulge in and hopefully on day overdose on
And to see this drunkenly ignorant fool dirty your perfection with his disgusting touch? Well it set off a reaction in belch that he hoped youâd never have to see
He bashed the manâs head against the pavement over and over again as he felt every scream of pain was retribution for him disgracing the religion of you that belch follows so piously
The crunch of the mans broken nose against the floor brings belch back to reality as his eyes shoot up and meet your horrified gaze
You had seen belch commit violent acts before, you had been a victim of those acts many times
But those were all on the orders of Henryâs, this time was different
This act was committed with free will
Belch hurriedly tried to explain himself and begged you to not be afraid
You swallow your fear and horror as you hold his bloodied hands in yours and belch only looks down at you with practically heart eyes
You assumed that if you rejected him the violence would turn on you, and all though you were wrong belch was too blinded with awe to understand that
In his eyes you had just accepted the most ugly part of himself, proving that the pedestal he had placed you on was correct and you were the angel on earth that he thought you was
In your eyes, you had just dodged a possibly painful punishment
In reality, you had just tamed the beast with a gentle giant underneath the surface

It pisses me off to see the way some Star Wars fans are so dismissive of Reva, Third Sister.
She's complex. She's interesting. She's clever. She's intelligent. She's strategic. She's conflicted. She's traumatized. She's scared. She's angry. She's a survivor.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series literally opens with her and her friends watching one of her Jedi mentors get gunned down by clone troopers during Order 66.
She was a FUCKING CHILD!!! They were in the middle of a lesson when the clones walked in and started shooting everyone!! These were Anakin Skywalker's troopers and they were executing every single Jedi around them.
These children had NO idea what was going on. They were scared and they tried to run to safety.
We remember this scene from Revenge of the Sith and we all immediately knew what it meant.
These are the same bodies that Obi-Wan Kenobi found when he and Yoda returned to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after having to kill so many of Anakin's clone troopers just to survive.
These are children that the Jedi Council wasn't there to save.
Palpatine snuffed out the light of the Jedi in one swift act of terrorism and then blamed the Jedi for their own genocide after taking over the entire galaxy.
And in times of war, the weakest among everyone always suffer the most.
This is what Reva, Jedi youngling, remembers most about the end of the Clone Wars.
Anakin Skywalker, hero of the Clone Wars and former padawan of the great Obi-Wan Kenobi, murdered all of her friends and injured her.
She had to play dead amongst the dead bodies of her friends, and that's how she survived. She witnessed Anakin Skywalker murder all the Jedi in the temple with no one there to stop him because the other Jedi Masters were being executed in a war they had never wanted to enter into in the first place.
She blames herself for not being able to save her friends because she wasn't strong enough to fight back. No youngling was ever going to be strong enough to stand against Anakin Skywalker. She wanted revenge against Anakin Skywalker, and she was just as desperate to get to Obi-Wan Kenobi as he was. She wanted to kill Anakin Skywalker just as badly as Darth Vader wanted to kill Obi-Wan.
She was alone in a galaxy that tortured and executed surviving Jedi. She spent ten years plotting her revenge against Anakin. She was angry at Obi-Wan for not being there to stop Anakin, and rightfully so.
The Republic fell. Reva and her friends were left unprotected. She was the only person she relied on because everyone else failed her. She was only a child when she lost everyone.
And it's clear she was conflicted by her role as an Inquisitor. She doesn't have the training the other Inquisitors do because she volunteered to be an Inquisitor while all the others were tortured and terrorized into falling to the dark side. She only wanted access to Anakin so she could get justice for what he did to her and her family.
Unlike Anakin, Reva couldn't find it in herself to harm a child. She was seeking revenge solely against Anakin Skywalker. Luke and Leia are the same age she was when she watched her friends and family die in front of her.
Yes, she was prepared to torture Leia, but she consistently hesitated, and when Tala walked in, Reva turned away. She stopped. Yeah she was mad, but she didn't have to go through with it. She'd already planted a tracker on Lola. She was already planning on allowing them to escape so she could locate their secret base. She just needed to bait Obi-Wan. Her plan worked perfectly, and she didn't even have to hurt this child who was annoying the shit out of her (not realizing she was dealing with Anakin Skywalker's offspring).
She went to Tatooine to kill Luke, but she couldn't. She hunted him down without bothering to kill Owen or Beru. She only cared about one thing. Getting justice for what happened to everyone she had been unable to save at the end of the war. She was only a child, and when she realized she was about to kill a defenseless child just to get revenge, she couldn't do it. She saw her face when she looked down at Luke and cried when she realized she couldn't do it.
She was so horrified by what she had been prepared to do and returned him to Owen and Beru alive. She fell to her knees and sobbed because she thought she failed her family in the end.
Obi-Wan was there for her this time. He reminded her that by showing mercy, she was giving her friends and family peace. She was not going to become the monster that Anakin Skywalker was.
Obi-Wan helped her and reminded her that she gets to decide who she wants to be from this point forward. She refused to become Anakin Skywalker, and a weight was finally starting to be lifted from her shoulders. A weight she had been carrying for ten long years.
She did what she thought she had to just to survive. She had only been a child with no guidance because everyone she loved died. She survived by joining the ranks of the enemy so she could plot her revenge. Obi-Wan showed her mercy at the moment she needed it most. He wasn't angry with her. He was compassionate. She survived Order 66 just like he did, but she had been defenseless when they were thrust into a galaxy that tortured and killed Force sensitive individuals and those who helped them. He had failed Reva during Order 66, and he wasn't going to fail her this time.
She is getting a second chance at finding her path in life despite the bad things she did. Everyone deserves a second chance. She was robbed of her childhood and had to grow up overnight. She had to learn how to survive. And that's exactly what she did. Just not in the way she expected.
#star wars#obi-wan kenobi#reva sevander#third sister#anakin skywalker#darth vader#order 66#luke skywalker#leia organa#reva has to learn how to forgive herself#i saw someone whine that we had grogu so we had no need for another jedi youngling survivor#like what kind of nonsense is that?#grogu was protected and taken to a safe location in the midst of order 66#reva had to watch everyone she loved die#they had extremely different experiences during the same incident#grogu was an infant and reva was in the middle of a fucking class when order 66 happened#if you can't empathize with her at all then there is something wrong with you#because i imagine an entire generation of school children in america understand exactly what that must have felt like

HOTD blog post GRRM posted and almost immediately deleted under the cut for archival purposes
Beware the Butterflies
SEPTEMBER 4, 2024
Profile Pic
Back in July, I promised you some further thoughts about Blood and Cheese⊠and Maelor the Missing⊠after my commentary on the first two episodes of HotD season 2, âA Son for a Sonâ and âRhaenyra the Cruel.â
Those were terrific episodes: well written, well directed, powerfully acted. A great way to kick off the new season. Fans and critics alike seemed to agree. There was only one aspect of the episodes that drew significant criticism: the handling of Blood and Cheese, and the death of Prince Jaehaerys. From the commentary I saw on line, opinion was split there. The readers of FIRE & BLOOD found the sequence underwhelming, a disappointment, watered down from what they were expecting. Viewers who had not read the book had no such problems. Most of them found the sequence a real gut-punch, tragic, horrifying, nightmarish, etc. Some reported being reduced to tears.
I found myself agreeing with both sides.
In my book, Aegon and Helaena have three children, not two. The twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, are six years old. They have a younger brother, Maelor, who is two. When Blood and Cheese break in on Helaena and the kids, they tell her they are debt collectors come to exact revenge for the death of Prince Lucerys: a son for a son. As Helaena has two sons, however, they demand that she choose which one should die. She resists and offers her own life instead, but the killers insist it has to be a son. If she does not name one, they will kill all three of the children. To save the life of the twins, Helaena names Maelor. But Blood kills the older boy, Jaehaerys, instead, while Cheese tells little Maelor that his mother wanted him dead. (Whether the boy is old enough to understand that is not at all certain).
Thatâs not how it happens on the show. There is no Maelor in HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, only the twins (both of whom look younger than six, but I am no sure judge of childrenâs ages, so I canât be sure how old they are supposed to be). Blood canât seem to tell the twins apart, so Helaena is asked to reveal which one is the boy. (You would think a glance up his PJs would reveal that, without involving the mother). Instead of offering her own life to save the kids, Helaena offers them a necklace. Blood and Cheese are not tempted. Blood saws Prince Jaehaerysâs head off. We are spared the sight of that; a sound effect suffices. (In the book, he lops the head off with a sword).
It is a bloody, brutal scene, no doubt. How not? An innocent child is being butchered in front of his mother.
I still believe the scene in the book is stronger. The readers have the right of that. The two killers are crueler in the book. I thought the actors who played the killers on the show were excellent⊠but the characters are crueler, harder, and more frightening in FIRE & BLOOD. In the show, Blood is a gold cloak. In the book, he is a former gold cloak, stripped of his office for beating a woman to death. Book Blood is the sort of man who might think making a woman choose which of her sons should die is amusing, especially when they double down on the wanton cruelty by murdering the boy she tries to save. Book Cheese is worse too; he does not kick a dog, true, but he does not have a dog, and heâs the one who tells Maelor that his mom wants him head. I would also suggest that Helaena shows more courage, more strength in the book, by offering her own own life to save her son. Offering a piece of jewelry is just not the same.
As I saw it, the âSophieâs Choiceâ aspect was the strongest part of the sequence, the darkest, the most visceral. I hated to lose that. And judging from the comments on line, most of the fans seemed to agree.
When Ryan Condal first told me what he meant to do, ages ago (back in 2022, might be) I argued against it, for all these reasons. I did not argue long, or with much heat, however. The change weakened the sequence, I felt, but only a bit. And Ryan had what seemed to be practical reasons for it; they did not want to deal with casting another child, especially a two-year old toddler. Kids that young will inevitably slow down production, and there would be budget implications. Budget was already an issue on HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, it made sense to save money wherever we could. Moreover, Ryan assured me that we were not losing Prince Maelor, simply postponing him. Queen Helaena could still give birth to him in season three, presumably after getting with child late in season two. That made sense to me, so I withdrew my objections and acquiesced to the change.
I still love the episode, and the Blood and Cheese sequence overall. Losing the âHelaenaâs Choiceâ beat did weaken the scene, but not to any great degree. Only the book readers would even notice its absence; viewers who had never read FIRE & BLOOD would still find the scenes heart-rending. Maelor did not actually DO anything in the scene, after all. How could he? He was only two years old.
There is another aspect to the removal of the young princeling, however.
Those of you who hate spoilers should STOP READING HERE. Spoilers will follow, at least for the readers among you. If you have never read FIRE & BLOOD, maybe it does not matter, because all I am going to âspoilâ here are things that happen in the book that may NEVER happen on the series. Starting with Maelor himself.
Sometime between the initial decision to remove Maelor, a big change was made. The princeâs birth was no longer just going to be pushed back to season 3. He was never going to be born at all. The younger son of Aegon and Helaena would never appear.
Most of you know about the Butterfly Effect, I assume.
Yes, there was a movie with that title a few years back. Itâs a familiar concept in chaos theory as well. But most science fiction fans were first exposed to the idea in Ray Bradburyâs classic time travel story, âA Sound of Thunder,â wherein a time traveler from the present panics and crushes a butterfly while hunting a T-Rex. When he returns to his own time, he discovers that the world has changed in huge and frightening ways. One dead butterfly has rewritten history. The lesson being that change begets change, and even small and seemingly insignificant alterations to a timeline â or a story â can have a profound effect on all that follows.
Maelor is a two year old toddler in FIRE & BLOOD, but like our butterfly he has an impact on the story all out of proportion to his size. The readers among you may recall that when it appears that Rhaenyra and her blacks are about to capture Kingâs Landing, Queen Alicent becomes concerned for the safety of Helaenaâs remaining children, and takes steps to save them by smuggling them out of the city. The task is given is two knights of the Kingsguard. Ser Willis Fell is commanded to deliver Princess Jaehaera to the Baratheons at Stormâs End, while Maelor is given over to Ser Rickard Thorne to be escorted across the Mander to the protection of the Hightower army on its way to Kingâs Landing.
Willis Fell delivers Jaehaera safely to the Baratheons at Stormâs End, but Ser Rickard fares less well. He and Maelor get as far as Bitterbridge, where he is revealed as a Kingsuard in a tavern called the Hogs Head. Once discovered, Ser Rickard fights bravely to protect his young charge and bring him to safety, but he does not even make it across the bridge before some crossbows bring him down, Prince Maelor is torn from his arms.. and then, sadly, ripped to pieces by the mob fighting over the boy and the huge reward that Rhaenyra has offered for his capture and return.
Will any of that appear on the show? Maybe⊠but I donât see how. The butterflies would seem to prohibit it. You could perhaps make Ser Rickardâs ward be Jaehaera instead of Maelor, but Jaehaera canât be killed, she has a huge role to play as Aegonâs next heir. Could maybe make Maelor a newborn instead of a two year old, but that would scramble up the timeline, which is a bit of a mess already. I have no idea what Ryan has planned â if indeed he has planned anything â but given Maelorâs absence from episode 2, the simplest way to proceed would be just to drop him entirely, lose the bit where Alicent tries to send the kids to safety, drop Rickard Thorne or send him with Willis Fell so Jaehaera has two guards.
From what I know, that seems to be what Ryan is doing here. Itâs simplest, yes, and may make sense in terms of budgets and shooting schedules. But simpler is not better. The Bitterbridge scene has tension, suspense, action, bloodshed, a bit of heroism and a lot of tragedy. Rickard Thorne is a tertiary character at best, most viewers (as opposed to readers) will never know he is gone, since they never knew him at all⊠but I rather liked giving him his brief moment of heroism, a taste of the courage and loyalty of the Kingsguard, regardless of whether they are black or green.
The butterflies are not done with us yet, however. In the book, when word of Prince Maelorâs death and the grisly manner of his passing (pp. 505) reaches the Red Keep, that proves to be the thing that drives Queen Helaena to suicide. She could barely stand to look at Maelor, knowing that she chose him to die in the âSophieâs Choiceâ scene⊠and now he is dead in truth, her words having come true. The grief and guilt are too much for her to bear.
In Ryanâs outline for season 3, Helaena still kills herself⊠for no particular reason. There is no fresh horror, no triggering event to overwhelm the fragile young queen.
And the final butterfly follows soon thereafter.
Queen Helaena, a sweet and gentle soul, is much beloved by the smallfolk of Kingâs Landing. Rhaenyra was not, so when rumors began to arise that Helaena did not kill herself, but rather was murdered at Rhaenyraâs command, the commons are quick to believe them. âThat night Kingâs Landing rose in bloody riot,â I wrote on p. 506 of FIRE & BLOOD. It is the beginning of the end for Rhaenyraâs rule over the city, ultimately leading to the Storming of the Dragonpit and the rise of the Shepherdâs mob that drives Rhaenyra to flee the city and return to Dragonstone⊠and her death.
Maelor by himself means little. He is a small child, does not have a line of dialogue, does nothing of consequence but die⊠but where and when and how, that does matter. Losing Maelor weakened the end of the Blood and Cheese sequence, but it also cost us the Bitterbridge scene with all its horror and heroism, it undercut the motivation for Helaenaâs suicide, and that in turn sent thousands into the streets and alleys, screaming for justice for their âmurderedâ queen. None of that is essential, I suppose⊠but all of it does serve a purpose, it all helps to tie the story lines together, so one thing follows another in a logical and convincing manner.
What will we offer the fans instead, once weâve killed these butterflies? I have no idea. I do not recall that Ryan and I ever discussed this, back when he first told me they were pushing back on Aegonâs second son. Maelor himself is not essential⊠but if losing him means we also lose Bitterbridge, Helaenaâs suicide, and the riots, well⊠thatâs a considerable loss.
And there are larger and more toxic butterflies to come, if HOUSE OF THE DRAGON goes ahead with some of the changes being contemplated for seasons 3 and 4âŠ

The Actress (Starring in Your Bad Dreams)
warnings: cursing, death, blood, loosely follows canon, f!targaryen!reader, reader is married to harwin strong, rhaenyraâs kids are fathered by someone else, no use of y/n, proofread just a little bit, platonic!daemon x reader
summary: you would get your revenge, no matter what.
authorâs note: I listened to âlook what you made me doâ live reputation tour version the entire time I wrote this, and it was the inspiration for making the reader kinda revenge crazy lol. reader is definitely the actress starring in Aemondâs bad dreams. also HOTD s2 trailer came out today!!! anyways enjoy!
"Lucerys is dead."
Your sister spoke softly, her voice cracking as her grief choked her. Lucerys had been killed. Her baby, her middle child. The sweetest and kindest of Rhaenyra's children, and he had been murdered.
"By whom?" You asked, hands clenching into fists at your sides. Harwin stood behind you, his hand resting lightly against one of your shoulders.
You were already preparing to go to war over Rhaenyra's claim. But this? The murder of her son? Gods help whoever made the mistake of killing a prince of the realm. Of killing your nephew.
"Aemond." Rhaenyra's voice was full of pain. You wished you could take it from her, but it was impossible. You had no children of your own; you could not possibly know how she was feeling in this moment. But, you knew how you felt.
You felt angry.
"My love," Harwin's lips brushed your ear as he whispered softly. He already knew how the gears in your mind were turning- how you were already planning your revenge. "Take a breath."
"Sister," Rhaenyra choked out as she reached forward and grasped one of your hands in hers. She held onto you tightly, her grip almost bruising. You could not feel the pain- rage consumed you. It was burning through your veins, fierce and hot, and you gave a mirthless laugh as she spoke her next words.
"Please, do not act rashly. Daemon has sent word he is to take care of it."
"I do not care what Daemon is doing," you seethed, and you felt the hand Harwin had on your shoulder squeeze. He was trying to calm you, to ground you, but there was nothing he could do for you now.
You were a Targaryen. A Princess of the Realm. A dragon.
You were a fucking dragon, and whatever would dare to stand in your way now would be burned to ash. Burned to an unrecognizable heap as you took your revenge on the greens.
"Whatever he is doing is not enough. First they steal your crown," you shook your head, an eerie, humorless smile forming on your mouth. "Then they steal your fucking kingdom," you pulled your hand from her grasp. "And now they steal the life of your son."
"Sister-" Rhaenyra attempted, but you cut her off as you took a step forward. Harwin's hand fell from your shoulder as you moved. He watched the two of you intently, his lips pressed into a thin line.
"Fire and blood, sister," you seethed. "They will pay." You turned quickly, your eyes meeting your husband's briefly before you were striding towards the chamber doors.
"As your queen, I order you to do nothing!" Rhaenyra called after you, and you stopped in your tracks. "Please, sister. Nothing yet. Not now." Her voice turned soft once more, and you knew she was desperate for your acquiesce.
You exhaled, closing your eyes for a moment before opening them once more. You did not turn around- you could not stand to see the pure agony on your sister's face any longer.
"Out of respect for you, sister," you paused. "I will stand down. But make no mistake- no one will stand in my way once this war begins in earnest."
Rhaenyra said nothing else. You left the chamber without another word, and Harwin did not follow.
â
Daemon had enacted his revenge through the form of Blood and Cheese. Word reached you in a matter of days that one of Helaena's children had been murdered. An eye for an eye, one might say. You thought things were far from equal.
The Dance of Dragons began, and you were one of the first to fly to battle. Harwin did not try to discourage you; in fact, he supported your enlistment. He became a crucial member of Rhaenyra's council, as he had been Commander of the City Watch and knew more than most about King's Landing. He took to strategy while you took to the skies.
Both sides sustained heavy losses. You watched Rhaenys and Meleys perish. Listened as the greens called your sister, the rightful queen, "Rhaenyra the Cruel." Fought while soldiers screamed in terror as you rained dragon fire upon them.
You were the first to fly headfirst into battle. You matched Daemon's ferocity with ease, and the pair of you were ruthless. You shared the true blood of the dragon- the anger, the fire, the fierceness, the chaos. The two of you worked seamlessly together, and the greens began to call you "The Dragons of Death."
You fought tirelessly, but the one battle you yearned for was where you found yourself now. You sat astride your dragon, it's black scales glistening in the setting sun. Daemon was atop Caraxes, the two of them on your left.
Across from you were the green's greatest assets: Vhagar and Aemond. The two of them were the only reason this dance had gone on for as long as it had.
You watched your half-brother with narrowed eyes. The beat of your dragon's wings sounded like a battle drum. This was the fight you had been waiting for, and you did not falter as your hands gripped your dragon's reins.
"The two of you have lived too long!" Aemond called out to you and Daemon, to which Daemon gave a humorless, empty laugh.
"On that," he called back from across the sky. "We much agree."
Caraxes roared, the high-pitched sound of his whistle deafening from this close. Your dragon roared in concert. It was a sound you'd heard since you were a child, and never did it sound so haunting as it did now.
Your dragons surged forward, and the battle became a blur. Dragonfire scorching the air around you, making breathing difficult. Fire dancing along your skin when the flames got too close. Slashes from close calls with Vhagar's claws.
Although the older dragon's size was imposing, it was it's biggest fault. Both yours and Daemon's dragons were quicker, and it was this agility that ultimately led to the end of both Vhagar and Aemond.
You caught Daemon's gaze as he flew past you, his eyes telling you his plans. If anything good was to come from this dance, it was that you and Daemon had developed a deep understanding of one another. Battle after battle, the two of you had learned to fight together in tandem. Harwin joked that it was like the two of you could read each other's minds.
It was this bond that let you know all you needed to know. You gave a nod of your head in the split second it took for you to fly past him. An agreement was made, and you braced yourself for the aftermath.
Caraxes slammed into Vhagar, the younger dragon's teeth clamping down around her neck. Vhagar gave a wounded screech, her claws slashing through the air, ripping through Caraxes' wing; however, Caraxes did not let go. The dragon was almost as stubborn as his rider, and you would have laughed if the circumstances were different.
Daemon precariously lifted himself from his saddle, his hands reaching for his nephew's dragon. Aemond yelled something you couldn't hear over the roar of the wind as you flew by, your dragon's claws tearing through one of Vhagar's wings.
Vhagar and Caraxes began a downward spiral and you followed. Tears were ripped from your eyes due to the harsh wind as your dragon nosedived. You could just make out the figure of Daemon climbing atop Vhagar.
"Uncle!" You yelled as you finally caught up with the descending dragons. Daemon paid you no mind, instead focusing on grappling with Aemond atop Vhagar. You watched as Daemon unsheathed Dark Sister and raised the sword, preparing to drive the blade into his nephew's head.
But Daemon faltered, and Aemond reached out and shoved. Daemon fell backwards off of Vhagar, and you acted in a split second. You tightly gripped the reins guiding your dragon, yanking them to the side. Your dragon obeyed the direction, flying right towards the still grappling Vhagar and Caraxes.
Once you deemed it was close enough, you threw yourself off your dragon and right into Aemond. He gasped as the force of your impact sent the two of you careening off the side of Vhagar. You grappled midair, your hands clutching each other as you fell.
"Your time is up, brother," you told him, your tone brusque. You released him then, and Aemond's eye widened as you gave him a grim smile.
Your dragon flew by then, commanded by your uncle. Your plan had worked perfectly. While you had been busy with Aemond, your dragon had saved the free-falling Daemon. Now, he returned the favor as he swooped by with an outstretched arm.
Your hand met just barely met his, and he grabbed on with an iron grip. Daemon pulled you as hard as he could, and the force was just enough to bring you close enough to grab on the edge of your dragon's saddle. Your dragon slowed then, quickly coming to a stop mid-air as Daemon reached down and helped you onto it's back.
"Thanks," you said between pants. Daemon nodded, and only now did you chance a look down.
You were close enough to the ground to clearly see Aemond's corpse floating atop the lake below. A few hundred feet to Aemond's left, you could see the bodies of both dragons partially submerged. As your dragon landed near the lake, you and Daemon slid from its back and approached the water.
The high-pitched whistle of Caraxes met your ears, but it was much softer than you had ever heard it. Red colored the lake as the blood from the dragonsâ wounds spread.
Movement came from the dragons, and you watched as Caraxes painstakingly removed himself from Vhagar's grasp. The red dragon whistled once more, and Daemon moved forward as the dragon pulled itself from the lake.
It was not a pretty sight. Death usually wasn't. But it was more brutal in the fact that it was a dragon.
Something so beautiful, so menacing, so rare. Something that made your family royalty. Something that made you close to gods.
The dragon collapsed by the edge of the lake, his long neck curling to angle his face towards Daemon as the man approached. Daemon reached a hand towards Caraxes' snout, brushing it reassuringly. You watched from afar, breathing deep for the first time since the death of Lucerys.
You had taken you revenge with fire and blood. Aemond and his dragon were dead. The blow the greens had taken today would be debilitating.
You smiled then, a true, achingly wide smile. Aemond had gotten what was coming to him, and it was by yours and Daemon's hands.
"Fire and blood," you had told Rhaenyra.
Fire and fucking blood.

âYour own father used to say those people only drank water because it didnât rain bloodâ vs two district boys who are assumed to be murder machines, yet prove that statement wrong multiple times: Reaper and Marcus.
PART ONE: REAPER
When Reaper is first introduced to us, we learn heâs rangy but muscular; we read about him wrapping his hands around Coriolanusâs throat on the truck headed to the zoo and about Dill, his District partner, saying he has killed a Peacekeeper before in District 11, without ever getting caught.Â
Our first impression of him is that of a dangerous person, one whoâs even clever in his lethality, and because of that we know heâs a presumed possible victor.
Lucy Gray mentions him more than once as one of the biggest threats, when talking about how sheâs going to try as hard as she can to win the Games.
She also tells Coriolanus how Reaper apologized to the other tributes for having to kill them and told them he is going to make it up to them after, by taking revenge on the Capitol. Everyone takes this as him meaning it maliciously and with arrogance, âcause how else could he possibly mean it, right? Coriolanus thinks that heâs not only powerful, but good at mind games too.Â
But the truth is that Reaper meant that genuinely, even with a certain innocence, and naivety to how it could have been misinterpreted. There was no malice or arrogance in his statement, but there was guilt and regret and grief, because of being forced into taking lives. He went into the arena fully prepared and resigned to kill the others to save himself, but not without obvious dissent.
When the Games start, he arms himself and heads to the stands. Coriolanus thinks he does so to begin his hunt, even if everyone else had fled in other directions and he had made no move to go after them.
Right after this we read about how Tanner, someone whoâs also a presumed possible victor, is able to climb up to the first row of the stands and sit in the sun for a while, completely unbothered and unharmed. Reaper doesnât try to fight him, even if it would have only been to his advantage, since he could have easily taken out his strongest opponent now that the Games had just begun and he wasnât exhausted and starving.
His first interaction with another tribute in the arena is with a dying Dill, carrying her out of the tunnels, placing her in the sun and talking to her in the last moments of her life.Â
His first act with another tribute, is comforting a dying child.Â
This is when the âmurder machineâ image starts to crumble. Coriolanusâs classmates talk about how he doesnât look so tough, doesn't look like the person who âpromised to kill all the othersâ, which he never actually did.
But still, after all this, Coriolanus sees his distressed pacing around Dill, as him possibly being âeager to get back to the huntâ, a hunt he never even began, and not just him feeling pained and powerless at Dillâs condition.Â
When Coriolanus is sent into the arena to get Sejanus out, Bobbin, Mizzen, Tanner and Coral are the tributes who go after them to try to kill them. No sign of Reaper at any point.
When Lucy Gray gets out of the tunnels with a rabid Jessup after her, he makes no move to kill them either. Coriolanus points out how he lets Lucy Gray go and only walks up to the bottles of water on the ground.
Again and again and again, he has a chance to easily take a life to save his own or take a small revenge against the Capitol, but he doesnât.Â
His second interaction with a tribute is with Lamina. He walks up to her, they negotiate an exchange of something both of them desperately need and that forms a bond between the two of them.
Then Coral, Mizzen and Tanner appear and he leaves, he goes behind the barricade and he falls asleep.
When he comes back out, heâs shocked to see Lamina and Tanner dead on the ground. And this is when he starts to make true his promise of avenging the tributes after their death.Â
He lifts Lamina up in his arms and places her next to Marcusâs and Bobbinâs corpses and then collects Tanner, Dill and Sol, as well, and covers them all with the flag of Panem. And he keeps doing this with all the tributes for the rest of the Games, right until his death.Â
This is the best form of revenge he could take. Not only because he disrespects the flag, causing great disdain among Capitol citizens; but also because, most importantly, he humanizes the tributes and gives them dignity, two things the Capitol has tried in every way to take away from them. He gives them as proper a burial as he can manage in those circumstances, makes it so now they can finally rest, tucked in a corner and covered, their corpses no longer on display for a bunch of sick peopleâs amusement. He honors them. He could have left them all scattered out on the dusty arena ground, but he didnât. He took care of them.
Even when itâs just him and Lucy Gray left and heâs one step away from winning, he shows no signs of wanting to attack her. Doesnât matter that he could easily take her out, save himself and finally go home. No, even then his main concern is that the tributes can properly rest with their corpses concealed.Â
Everyone expected him to kill the most people, but he died in that arena killing no one and without ever even attempting to. He died holding strong to his humanity and making sure the fallen tributes could hold strong to theirs as well even in death.
Contrary to what we and the Capitol are made to believe initially, Reaper turns out to be pretty innocuous. Heâs not a naturally violent or aggressive person, not a natural born killer and he refuses to be as well. This was a life or death situation and yet he didnât even harm anyone. He has killed before, he is capable of it, but if he didnât even do it in this case, even when all it would have taken for him to save himself was killing a girl smaller and younger than him, then imagine how dire and desperate the situation must have been when he had to resort to it.
He defied the Capitol by not participating in the Games, by not letting them turn him into the murder machine they wanted and expected him to be, and by honoring the corpses of the children whose lives have been so cruelly and unjustly cut short.
(Before moving on to Marcus, I wanna clarify some things in case anyone whoâs reading this has only seen the movie. Reaper snapping at Clemensia during the one-on-one mentor-tribute interviews never happens in the book, neither does him looking angrily into the camera in the arena and challenging the Capitol to punish him arrogantly. Like weâve just seen, this perceived arrogance and aggression in Reaper is a very surface level misconception of the people around him, thatâs easily debunkable, that who made the movie took and ran with wrongfully.Â
And actually thereâs a few heartbreaking scenes in the book that contrast heavily with the image the movie created of him, like him tying a piece of the flag around his shoulders like a cape and spinning around, watching it fly behind him, and then running in the sun with his arms spread wide; and him rocking gently back and forth on himself for comfort, after the snake attacks, which is not when he dies in the book. Heâs not the threatening, angry guy who tests the Capitol that they made him in the movie, heâs just a severely traumatized kid. Nothing more than a kid.
The movie made tons of stupid changes like this, that completely miss and disregard the whole point of both characters and story. Trust me when I say 99% of the characters are portrayed very wrongfully in it. So please keep that in mind.)
PART TWO: MARCUS
Marcus, like Reaper, was initially seen as a probable winner in the Games, before being murdered. Coriolanous makes note of his size multiple times, describing him as âtoweringâ, as having a âcolossal frameâ, as âdwarfing the other tributesâ, and comparing him to a grizzly bear.Â
Itâs exactly because of his size that people think of him as a sure winner, as capable of taking down everyone else, as threatening and deadly.
But then we hear Sejanus, the only person who actually got to know him at some point, talk about him, and the first and one thing he mentions about Marcus is his kindness.Â
He tells Coriolanus how when they were still classmates in Two, he hurt his finger really badly and Marcus helped him by bringing him a cup of snow he scooped from the windowsill. He says he did it without being prompted by anyone, without consulting anyone, not even the teacher, and without even being friends with Sejanus.Â
Thatâs actually the very first thing Sejanus tells us about him. They werenât enemies, but they werenât friends either. Marcus had no real reason to do it, especially considering how the Plinths were, and still are, deeply despised in Two, for having helped the Capitol win the war. He did it almost as a reflex, because thatâs who he is as a person.Â
And this pure, unconditional kindness, told by the one person who actually knew him, goes against the image of him everyone formed by just looking at him, against what everyone assumed because heâs district, heâs a tribute, and heâs tall and strong and broad, so he has to be dangerous and lethal, he will brutally kill everyone to save himself; heâs capable of it anyway.
As I already said, the Plinths are deeply despised in Two, Sejanus is a filthy traitor in his eyes, one whoâs benefiting from a luxurious, safe life in the Capitol, thanks to blood money; blood of thousands of what were supposed to be his people, blood whose spillage made them lose the war and caused the realization of the Games, bringing Marcus to that very situation.
Sejanus doesnât have to worry about whether or not heâs going to be able to fill his stomach everyday; whether heâll be able to finish his studies or will have to drop out of school early, to go work to help sustain his family; whether the dangerous working conditions will be the cause of his early demise, or being sent to an arena to kill or be killed by a bunch of other children for amusement will be, and what will happen to his family once heâll be gone. All of this thanks to his familyâs betrayal.
No doubt he resents Sejanus and is angry at him, a part of him maybe even faults him a bit for everything, but he never takes it out on him. It would be easy to single him out, pick him and make him pay for this situation, since he canât make the whole Capitol pay; take some sort of revenge on Strabo Plinth in the name of Two and Thirteen and all other Districts, by harming his son.Â
Sweet Sejanus, who brings the tributes food when no one else thought about it, who keeps pleading with him to accept it, who tries to help them however he can, would probably let him do it. He would take the hit, metaphorical or not, because itâs clear he has guilt gnawing at him and would feel like he deserves it. And Marcus is definitely aware of it.Â
But he never gets violent, physically nor verbally, never tries to attack him or spit insults or hate at him. Instead he just ignores him.
He had many chances to do harm, even to kill Capitol citizens and Peacekeepers as revenge, a small and trivial one, but still a revenge, and he had many chances to let his frustration and anger out on Sejanus and use him as a punching bag, but he never did, because despite what everyone assumed about him, thatâs not the type of person he is.
PART THREE: SEJANUSÂ
Sejanus, whom Iâve already mentioned several times in this post, is another District boy with the ability to take lives, but whoâs repulsed and disturbed by the mere idea of it.Â
With Marcus and Reaper, itâs a matter of first impressions and then getting to actually know them and learn theyâre not like they seemed. With Sejanus itâs the opposite.Â
First thing we learn about him in the book, is his background: born in District 2, his father made fortune during the war and was able to buy his family a life in the Capitol.Â
But the first thing we learn about him as a person, is that heâs shy and sensitive.Â
Throughout the entirety of the book, over and over and over again, we see that heâs good, and kind, and gentle, and sweet and takes things so to heart. Itâs constantly pointed out by the people around him.Â
And itâs constantly shown to us by him as well, with the passion he puts into standing up against the dehumanization and mistreatment of District people; with how affected he is by these aspects and by the Games; with how he tries in every way he can to help the tributes; with how he made it his life mission to make things better for the Districts; with how heâs never mean or spiteful to people who bully and disrespect him.
Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is at its very center a discussion on human nature. He (alongside Dr. Gaul) is the main character who explicitly talks about it, and he believes in the inherent goodness of humans and constantly advocates in favor of it. All the injustice and atrocities he witnessed and experienced, never made him change his mind or his actions, never made it so compassion and love werenât his driving forces.
His heart is big, and kind, and pure. And he wears it on his sleeve all the time. Heâs referred to as âemotionalâ and âcompassionateâ, his eyes are soulful, his face is incredibly expressive, and thereâs so many instances in which heâs described as speaking with a voice so full of sentiment, so many instances of his eyes filling with tears, of him wiping his face cause they spilled out.Â
Itâs well established how good and uncorrupted he is, how devoted to humanity he is, how much he values life.
And then in the third part of the book, we learn heâs an excellent marksman, a natural one even, who has been training in shooting every week since he was tiny.
Heâs so good, that the sergeant in Twelve, as to not lose someone with Sejanusâs level of ability, refuses to give him the recommendation he needs in order to train to become a medic, even when Sejanus purposefully shoots much worse than heâs capable of, to hide his talent.Â
The boy who values life more than anything in the world, has the ability to take one even with his eyes closed.
When he arrived in Twelve, wearing on his body the signs of the toll that the Capitol, the Games and what happened to Marcus, had taken on his mental health; with the prospect of building a new life for himself in which he could help the world become a better place; of training to be a medic and save lives; Coriolanus noted he had a much lighter air to himself, as if a heavy weight had been lifted off of him.
But when he is confronted with the reality that he is now a soldier and is expected to kill, Coriolanus says that his expression goes back to being as gloomy as it had been in the Capitol, the heavy weight now back on his shoulders.Â
At dinner he doesnât take a single bite of food, which is a behavior weâve seen from him before, one he falls into when his mental health gets concerningly bad. And the reason is that he is terrified by the idea of having to kill someone, or someone dying because he canât bring himself to shoot first. Because to him, every life is precious and none is disposable, and the possibility of being the cause of one being taken away, is an unbearable thought.
Reaper and Marcus had many chances and what could be considered reasons to kill, but they refused to. Sejanus, who is expected to kill because heâs a soldier and the best shooter, who would be punished, possibly even with execution, if he didnât, refuses to.Â
All three of them have the power to take lives with little effort but choose to cherish and honor them instead, choose kindness, choose humanity even over their own self preservation, proving both the Capitol and Crassus Snowâs statement about District people being bloodthirsty, wrong, by simply being their honest, uncorrupted selves until the end; by being truthful to who they are no matter what.
#divided it into three parts for an easier read#bonus third district boy at the end that doesnât appear in the title :) <3#honestly this is just an appreciation post for my favorite tbosas boys#âthey drink water cause they cant drink bloodâ said crassus fucking snow of all people father of coriolanus fucking snow of all people#nasty evil hypocrite same as his son#also thereâs obviously other examples of this with other characters#i focused on them specifically because 1) theyâre among my favorite characters hehe#but mostly because 2) i find the whole âfirst impact vs realityâ thing SO interesting#reaper ash#marcus tbosas#sejanus plinth#coriolanus snow#crassus snow#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#the hunger games

I think Luz's trauma due to being an abuse victim gets ignored a lot in favor of other characters. Luz has an odd role in the fandom as this character who other characters rely on, or who isn't an abuse victim but is supportive of her friends who are, and I think that ends up missing a huge part of her story.
Belos compliments her a lot, which is partially because he wants to reach out to her and mostly because he thinks he can manipulate her. He does some backhanded compliments, telling her she's improved but she still has work to do to catch up to him. He also thanks her quite a few times. The way he thanks her intentionally triggers her guilt, especially when he thanks her for helping him with Hunter. He also compliments her to put other people down, like when he tells her she's "better than this" (implying their race makes them morally superior).
He also uses the same manipulation tactic on Luz that he does on Hunter, although it doesn't work as well on her. He tries to remove his own agency for his physical violence by blaming the Curse. The biggest example is in King's Tide, when he pretends he can't hear her as he's racing after her to try and kill her. He ends up cutting her face while pretending to be out of control and then in the same sequence has full control and clarity to talk to Hunter and the Collector. He gaslights Luz by trying to make it seem like it was The Curse causing him to act in the way he did.
He refers to Luz as "crazy" to invalidate her emotions and harming Hunter in front of her also is a form of abuse. He's obviously aware that hurting Hunter traumatizes Luz (and everyone else) but as his focus transfers from Hunter to Luz in Hollow Mind, he starts targeting her specifically by harming Hunter to hurt her (especially in TTT). Belos shifts the blame for events from himself to Luz and also attempts to make her feel guilty. Hunter seems to understand that Luz is also being abused and tries to reassure her that Belos is an abuser and she shouldn't take what he says at face value. Luz ends up taking that advice to heart after she's able to forgive herself and face Belos. She doesn't speak to him but is able to hear his manipulation tactics and just. stare at him bc he's full of bullshit.
Just because he 'only' hits her a few times and isn't her guardian doesn't mean he can't abuse her or that he didn't. It's not really a protagonist-antagonist relationship as much as it is "adult man nuking 14 year old repeatedly until she becomes god and kills him". The idea that child abuse can only come from parents and not role models or other adults in your life is odd, because he distinctly holds a position of power over her (literally an Emperor and an adult who intentionally isolates her and the other kids alone to abuse them) and uses it to emotionally and physically harm her.
Papa Titan has to reassure her that she's okay to kill Belos because he's literally a serial killer who's lying about his intentions. Luz still slightly falls for Belos's sympathetic line until that moment because he very intentionally tried to get her to feel bad for him and also feel guilt about herself.
This is also why I really detest any fandom takes where Belos canonically is supposed to care about her, or Luz owes him anything. Manipulation is not sympathetic. Belos committed premeditated murder and then used the remains of his murder victim to try to make a "Better Version" of his murder victim which was actually just a way to punish him repeatedly and keep taking out revenge on kids who had nothing to do with the original conflict. Belos is Luz's abuser also, and Luz doesn't owe him any sort of kindness or consideration and her anger is valid.
Luz is an abuse victim of Belos's in addition to Hunter and the Collector (and Vee/Lilith by extension), and she should be considered as such rather than her trauma being invalidated in favor of other characters.
#the owl house#toh#long post#tw abuse#tw child abuse#luz noceda#explanation under cut#looooong post#it's kinda hard to tell if Darius and Raine would be also by extension#bc ultimately we have no idea wtf happened with Darius and Belos#but Terra for Raine for sure.#That place of employment was. not rated top 100 places to work in the Boiling Isles#much less for Darius who was connected to Belos when he was younger and then grew up and worked for him as an adult...#and there's 10000000% no way Belos wasn't awful to him bc Belos would've considered him similar to Evelyn#and like. it's hard to say who Belos hates most in the universe but it seems like Evelyn's in the top 3

Woe out the Storm (8) - What have you done
Wednesday Addams x female Reader
Summary: It took some time, but eventually you came to realize only Wednesday Addams could look at the raging storm of chaos and destruction and make a home out of it. Only she could listen to the cacophony of the roaring thunder and hear a melody.
Story warnings: Wednesday Addams, violence, slow burn
Story Masterlist / First part / Previous part / Next part
Word count: 4.9k
-There's a curse between us, between me and you-
Wednesday could admit her interests weren't ordinary, she could admit that neither she nor her family conformed to the norms of the society. She believed in different values; she ranked those values in a way most people wouldnât. Not choosing violence was, for example, ranked very lowly. And she wasnât opposed to murder and torture either.
Truthfully, it wasnât the fact that her father was accused of murder that bothered her, it was the fact that she heard about it from a stranger. He was supposed to be an open book, honest with her, with their family and her mother was supposed to be the same. Despite that, they hid the truth from her.
When she set those piranhas loose, fully intending to kill Pugsleyâs bully as an act of revenge, she openly told her parents about it. She expected the same openness from them. The society rejected them, deemed them too morbid and weird to be seen as normal; being an Addams meant only relying on select few, mostly family. So, she valued being honest and trusting those select few above nearly anything else.
And they, for their own reasons, betrayed that trust and put her in a position to learn about it in the worst way possible.
To make matters even worse, her father refused to be open with her yet again. He still wouldnât tell her the truth about what happened, even now that he was behind bars.
Somehow, perhaps against her better judgment, she ended up in front of your shed. It was the first time she came here, the first time sheâd step inside. She heard laughter from within and froze just as she was about to reach out for the doorknob. Of course. It was the Parentsâ weekend, and you were with your mother. Enid mentioned in passing that you had a good relationship with your mother, that the two of you were close and that you missed her.
You maintained a close relationship with your mother, something Wednesday wasnât capable of doing, even if she did deeply care about her family and despite knowing they loved her just as much. So, instead of interrupting you and asking you to help her find more clues that could help her prove her fatherâs innocence, she turned around and left. Sheâd have to go to her mother after all.
As she walked away, she began to wonder why she wanted you to help her, and truthfully, she didnât quite understand it. She was perfectly capable of handling this on her own. Maybe it was because you just accepted her, never demanding from her to change, yet still being unapologetically you even when it meant you pushed Wednesday out of her comfort zone, like when you wiped that paint off her hands and face last week.
Or maybe it was as simple as you being honest with her, not once hiding the truth and in turn being frustrated by her own lack of honesty when she didnât tell you she asked Xavier to go to the dance with her. While Wednesday couldnât say you ranked honesty as high as she did, she could say you valued it.
If she was completely honest, even with just herself, she might have had it in her to admit the vision she had during RaveâN and what happened with Eugene had a lot to do with that as well. Somehow, deep down, Wednesday convinced herself that if she was there, close to you, maybe that vision wouldnât come true, and she wouldnât have to visit you at the hospital or attend your funeral.
~X~
You didnât always understand how lucky you were. Oftentimes as a child you wondered why you couldnât have a regular family, with two parents present in your life. Dad was with you a few days a year, around your birthday, and always secretly. Your mom did everything she could, even back then you guessed she did more for you than most single mothers could, but you had some resentment toward your dad.
âWhy couldnât he be normal, or any other kind of outcast? Why did he have to be a raiju?!â thatâs what you wondered for years, despising the restrictions being a raiju brought to your life. Fear and hatred caused you to separate the beast from yourself, you were a raiju, but the beast was, in your mind, the entirely different being, a creature that had nothing to do with you. The beast was dangerous, uncontrollable, and you despised it for what it could do to your loved ones or innocent bystanders.
The truth was that you should have begun going to Nevermore much earlier, the moment you showed the first signs of lightning, actually. But you cried and screamed at the mere thought of leaving your motherâs side, and she refused to even consider sending you to Nevermore, or anywhere else, unless you wanted to go. You were eight and she was the only real family you had.
âDo not underestimate my child,â sheâd say whenever someone told her it was too dangerous to keep you outside of Nevermore, that youâd lose control and hurt or kill someone. Neither side was right though.
It was more of a miracle, than anything else, that dad was home when there was a huge storm when you were twelve, otherwise you really could have hurt someone. That was when your resentment toward your dad began fading away, when he calmed you down, when he taught you how to better control your lightning, when he made sure you didnât hurt anyone, especially your mom. That was also when you finally agreed to go to Nevermore, because you could no longer risk it.
In the four years that followed your relationship with your dad improved, he dropped by more often, whenever you truly needed him. When you shifted for the first time, or when you really wanted to talk to him, he wouldnât arrive immediately, but heâd come and see you. So, when you saw Enidâs parents you just decided that you were lucky, that you had a loving mom that accepted you for who and what you were, and that your dad, while not always there, was by your side when you needed him.
And he would come now as well.
So, that was your family, and you wouldnât trade them for anything in the world.
With those thoughts filling your head you stepped into your room with a bounce to your steps. That energy dropped to a more usual intensity when you saw Enid, lying with her arms spread on her bed. âYouâre not a disappointment,â you immediately said as you went over to her side of the room and sat down next to her.
âTell that to my mother,â she sighed and looked to the side. This wasnât Enidâs usual mood, even when she was upset, she made sure everyone knew that. Her energy was more similar to Wednesday, if Wednesday ever sulked. And it really made you wish you could help her, actually help her and not just stand by her and offer support when she needed it.
âI will if you let me,â and you were completely serious, if only Enid allowed it, you would gladly have a long chat with Esther Sinclair.
Enid smiled a bit and reached out to you. âThanks, Y/N.â
You smiled back, taking her hand and squeezing it, offering Enid at least some small comfort.
âHow come you arenât with Wednesday?â she asked out of blue, and you had to resist an urge to facepalm at that. Your eye still twitched, and she probably noticed. âIâm not teasing, she was just looking for you, she even asked me where your shed is!â
That was odd. âWhy? Isnât she with her family?â
Enid sat up, now realizing you really didnât see Wednesday since this morning. âHer dad got arrested for murder and I think she plans to prove he is innocent,â Enid caught you up to speed with what happened.
You couldnât help but get a bad feeling in your bones. âMurder + family matters + Wednesday? Yeah, sheâs going to do something illegal and morally even more questionable, isnât she?â you sighed, looking at the goth girlâs part of the room.
Enid laughed uncomfortably. âI meanâŠâ she trialed off, she really didnât need to finish her sentence, you could figure it out yourself.
âSheâs going to dig the victim up, isnât she?â you were just about ready to run headfirst into a wall and pretend you didnât know she was probably going to get into trouble.
âMaybe sit this one out?â Enid offered, and if you were at least a bit logical and driven by reason you would have listened to her.
You werenât. You were driven by emotions and much like lightning those were difficult to control sometimes. Especially the ones connected to Wednesday Addams. âIf I get locked up for this, donât break me out. Iâll deserve every second of my punishment for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.â
âOn the brighter side,â Enidâs smirk was already terrifying enough. âYou could break you and Wednesday out and go into hiding,â she laughed as your eyes widened and you looked at her incredulously. âShe might actually love that!â
âI hate you,â you grumbled as you stood up and took a few deep breaths, youâd prefer to avoid living the rest of your life on the run. Dad being on the run from someone was already one family member living like that too many. You didnât even know who he was hiding from. You just knew it was serious enough for you to be given your momâs last name instead of his.
~X~
Wednesday was, indeed, digging up a grave, in fact, she was nearly done when you ran up to her and her mother. âPlease tell me you are nearly done,â you whisper-yelled at her. âHello, Mrs. Addams, itâs good to see you again,â you politely greeted her mother, who nodded with a smile, and then you immediately turned back to Wednesday. âThereâs no way this can end well, you know?â it wasnât even about what she was doing, Wednesday was going to be Wednesday and there was nothing you could do about that, you just wished she would have done it when it was even less risky. Like, way past midnight, with you there to watch out for the police, not like this, just before midnight and without you to stand watch.
âWeâll need to show it as evidence anyway, and theyâll figure out it was us no matter what we do,â Wednesday pointed out and you opened your mouth to respond, but you really couldnât argue with that logic.
Well, at least she already opened the coffin before you showed up. âRight,â you frowned and stepped down, inspecting the coffin. âIf you want me to, I think I can magnetize it and pull it out. Maybe. I never tried to do it with anything this heavy,â and just as you reached down bright light shined on all three of you. âEither the ground swallows me right now, or dad will ground me for the rest of my life,â you just raised your hands in surrender as police arrived.
âThereâs a hole right here,â Wednesday suggested.
âIâm not sharing unless itâs with you, Addams,â you deadpanned, missing the way Wednesdayâs eyes widened, and the way her breath hitched, and the way her cheeks darkened just a bit.
âOh my, how awfully unhinged,â Morticia commented, and youâve been around Wednesday and Thing long enough to figure out that wasnât meant to mean what it usually meant. So, you just gave a thumbs up as you got out of the grave, earning a graceful, elegant smile from the older woman.
~X~
Well, at least you werenât all alone, that was a positive, right? Nope! Because Wednesdayâs parents couldnât keep their hands off each other, and there were bars between them! Suddenly, you understood exactly why Wednesday would be averse to shows of affection and the idea of a relationship. They were unapologetically in love, and very passionate about showing that love, and you could admire that, to an extent, but still!
âNot even the long arm of law could keep us apart!â Gomez went right back to kissing Morticia.
âAt least weâll have one last night together!â maybe breaking out wasnât the worst idea, because you doubted you could listen to them all night.
And Wednesday was right there!
âIâve seen jackals with more self-control than you two,â Wednesday somehow managed to get them to stop, though they didnât properly separate. âNeither one of you is strong enough to serve hard time. And thanks to me you wonât have to,â she said.
âIâll pretend Iâm not included in that. The strong enough part,â you grinned a bit.
âYou especially arenât strong enough to serve hard time,â she shut you down without even a hint of hesitation.
Well, you guessed that was fair.
âI knew our little jailbird will have an escape plan,â Gomez exclaimed as she showed a finger to the three of you wrapped in a black handkerchief.
âItâs a souvenir from our outing, I borrowed it from Garrett, he died from nightshade poisoning,â she explained as her mom took the finger.
âHow come the police didnât find it?â and then you remembered this was Wednesday you were talking about, she probably glared, and they locked her up without even searching her. âYeah, donât answer that one.
The very corner of her lip twitched up as she glanced at you, as if pleased by your realization. âThe remarkable preservation of soft tissue and blue tint confirms it.â
âWhich means Garrett was dying-â her mom realized.
â-before you stabbed him,â Wednesday finished.
Her parents looked at one another. âYou look even more ravishing as an innocent woman,â and they were back to kissing.
âIâm not entirely sure thatâs how this situation works, but sure,â you looked away. You guessed poison being there proved self-defense though, and that might just be enough to drop charges. Although, knowing Wednesday she had something else up her sleeve as well.
âFor once could you two get off of each other and focus?â Wednesday asked and reached out for the finger. The moment she touched it a vision struck her, and you were immediately behind her, holding her up.
You looked at her parents and saw they recognized what happened to Wednesday, which was a relief. Though, there was some surprise on their faces. She probably never mentioned her visions to either of them.
âWednesday,â her mom leaned in a bit as Wednesday woke up from her vision. âDid you have a vision? What happened? What did you see?â
You stepped to the side, no longer worried that she might fall. Sometimes she fell, sometimes she didnât, you really couldnât be too cautious.
âThe night Garrett died he had a vial of nightshade poison that broke in his pocket. He wasnât just trying to kill father, he was going to use the nightshade poison to murder the entire school,â she explained.
~X~
âThe sweet taste of freedom! How I missed you!â you exclaimed when you were finally set free. At the same time as Gomez, actually, maybe the sheriff was being petty over you electrocuting his son last year, in which case you could get behind that. âI donât think we met, Iâm Y/N,â you raised your hand to greet Wednesdayâs brother.
He nodded, smiling a bit. âIâm Pugsley, thanks for going to jail with Wednesday,â he said sheepishly, though he took cover behind a rather tall man when Wednesday glared at him.
You grinned a bit at that and contemplated just leaving so the family could have a moment on their own.
âDonât even think about leaving, weâll go back to Nevermore together,â Wednesday said before you could even consider that idea properly.
âYouâre the boss, Wednesday,â you grinned cheekily, much to her annoyance.
You still stood aside, giving them enough space and privacy. You still smiled when Wednesday accepted a family hug.
And then your blood ran cold.
You felt the hair on the back of your neck stand up as the chill ran down your spine. You could recognize the electricity in the air, and you knew it was too late. "I'm going to be grounded for the rest of my teenage life," you swallowed the lump that formed in your throat and if this was an anime or a cartoon you were sure you'd have cartoonish tears falling down your cheeks.
He appeared in a burst of lightning, as in control as ever, with that bright orange lightning surrounding him and moving to his will. "Gomez! Why is my daughter in prison, Gomez?!" your dad was pissed, he was beyond angry as he stomped over to Gomez and pointed a finger at his chest. "How did you being accused of murder get her in jail?! Oh, hello Morticia, you look amazing as always," how he flipped between nearly yelling at Gomez to politely complimenting Morticia in a split second you would never understand. You could never.
"You look good as well, Elijah, it's nice to see you after all these years," Morticia greeted him with grace that shouldn't have been a part of her ordinary behavior, yet here you were.
You slowly took a few steps back, hoping to flee while he was distracted by Wednesday's parents.
WaitâŠ
He knew Wednesdayâs parents?
"Y/N is your daughter?" Gomez and Morticia seemed to be genuinely surprised. You couldn't blame them, with the different last name and everything.
"My pride and joy, yes," your dad said, momentarily forgetting about the issue at hand and grinning proudly.
It made you stop as you took in the pride in his gaze. You didnât think five words could have such an effect on you. Despite his absence, when he was there he was a great father, and to hear that he was proud of you made you smile.
âSo, about my daughter being in jail,â apparently, he wasnât going to drop it, so you slowly began backing away again. âNow where do you think you are going, Y/N?â well, so much for escaping silently.
âI just remembered something! See you later, Wednesday!â you were just about to turn into lightning when bright orange lightning circled you.
âDonât even think about that, kid,â you could hear the smirk in his voice.
âNow thatâs just unfair,â your eyes changed back from red to your usual eye color and you slumped to the ground, defeated. Of course heâd use his stronger lightning to prevent you from using your own lightning.
âElijah, Y/N was there for our Wednesday, donât be too strict with her,â Morticia came to your defense, and you felt like youâd eternally be grateful to the woman if it worked.
âYour Wednesday?â your dad repeated and blinked a few times, his eyes changing into their natural color, the same eye color you had. He glanced down, right at Wednesday who seemed to be genuinely interested in him. âAh, Anna did mention a new roommate,â he was piecing together whatever information he had. âThe fuck is this Gomez? Another Addams-raiju roommate situation?â
Your jaw dropped at that and you looked at Wednesday only to see well-concealed but definitely there shock on her face too. The two of you looked at each other and then at your fathers. âWhat the?!â you couldnât help but yell.
Gomez laughed at that. âIt looks like thatâs exactly the case,â he agreed as the lightning around you disappeared and you approached the group.
âWait, the roommate you told me about was Wednesdayâs dad?â you asked, still unable to fully process the new information.
Your dad nodded. âYeah, something like that,â he turned to Wednesday. âUh, there was a storm, and I lost control for a bit while Gomez and Fester were there, luckily I didnât hurt them, but, I could have,â he looked away, ashamed of losing control like that.
Wednesday took that information in and looked at you as if she just figured something out. You didnât like that look on her face.
âElijah left Nevermore after that, and we havenât seen or heard from him since. I never made the connection between Y/N and him,â Morticia said, mostly to Wednesday.
âAnna and I figured it was safer for Y/N to take Annaâs last name,â your dad explained. âNot that it helped you to stay out of jail, you little troublemaker,â he pulled you in, ruffling your hair.
You pulled away, annoyed that he kept that habit. âNo comment,â you rolled your eyes.
âJust be happy I convinced Weems not to call Anna,â your dad said and took a few steps back. âCome on, now, say goodbyes and follow me, Y/N,â his eyes turned orange once again. âGomez, Morticia, it was good seeing you and your family. Wednesday, thank you,â and he burst into lightning and went in the direction of the woods.
âDoes he not realize that I canât do that?â you just watched the spot where he was standing moments ago.
âWhy did he thank me?â Wednesday asked you.
You lightly rubbed the side of your neck. âUh, donât worry about it. Dad can be a bit random at times,â you sighed and pulled out your lucky knife. âIâll see you later!â and off you went, one burst of lightning at a time.
~X~
You were out of breath and on your hands and knees when you caught up with your dad and he didnât look even a bit tired. Guess you still had a long way to go. No shit, your lightning was still red, Still, his was orange, and that was just one level stronger than your own. Just how strong would a raiju with yellow let alone blue lightning be? You moved so you could sit down and hung your head low, still trying to catch your breath.
âYou did good, that was faster than I expected,â he still praised you, smiling proudly as he sat with his back against a tree.
You shook your head. âItâs not nearly as fast as it should be,â you rejected the compliment.
He sighed, standing up and approaching you. He sat down on the ground a few feet from you. âI donât care about how things should be, Y/N, I just want you to be happy and healthy,â he said softly.
âI know,â you smiled, having heard those words plenty of times. It was still hard to believe in them. Not because he ever did anything to make you doubt those words, but because it simply felt too good to be true. Just look at Enidâs parents, you couldnât imagine them, especially Esther, saying something like that to Enid. Although, Wednesdayâs parents seemed content with Wednesday just being happy in her own way as well.
âThis,â he gathered some lightning between his palms and raised his hands toward you. âitâs not a curse, Y/N, and neither are our beast forms.â
The smile fell off your face as you raised your head to glare at him. âDonât give me that. Not after you left this place because you were also afraid of these powers, of hurting people!â you yelled, red sparks dancing around you almost out of control.
And then his eyes turned yellow, and you jumped to your feet and put at least some distance between the two of you. Yellow lightning raged around him and he roared, loud and powerful, and animalistic, and moments later a huge golden bear stood in his place. He was much bigger than even a grizzly bear, as it was usually the case with raiju. There was barely any lightning coming from his body and you could only stare in awe. The less lightning there was, the more in control the person was, and your dad only had lightning coming from his eyes and front paws. He growled, though there was no threat in it, as if telling you to shift as well.
âI canât, I canât control it,â you refused, closing your eyes and turning away from him.
âThis is your best chance. While Iâm here everything will be fine even if you lose control,â he shifted back. âYouâre at your limit. Youâve been restraining it for over two years, and the more you restrain it, the more painful it gets. It might be the next time thereâs a storm, or on the fifth, or even tenth storm from today, but you will shift no matter how much you discharge,â he sighed, firmly grasping your shoulder. âFear isnât bad, Y/N, but donât be afraid of yourself. If you arenât ready to shift now, itâs fine, but give me a call when you feel like youâre ready,â it was the reassurance you needed. His words, his control over his beast form, it eased your worries, even if only a little bit. It gave you hope that maybe you could eventually control your own beast form.
âOkay, Iâll call you when Iâm ready,â you promised and hugged him.
He hugged you back, sighing. âI donât want to scare you, but you need to know one thing. With how inexperienced you are, no matter what happens, do not shift twice in a row. Even if you stay in control the first time, you wonât be able to control it the second time,â his words were definitive, there was no doubt there, for him, or for you.
âI know,â you whispered. âI know.â
âWeâre not separate from that form, itâs as much a part of us as the lightning,â and lightning couldnât do anything but destroy, it was too powerful to contain, direct and use for anything but battle. That was what lightning was, and that was what made it so frightening to take a form of a beast made of lightning.

The Parentsâ weekend was coming to a close, her parents, Pugsley and Lurch were leaving. Your father already left, as did most of the families. You were close to her, seeing as you just said goodbye to your father and he wanted to say goodbye to her parents one more time, and meet Pugsley this time. So, even after your father left, you stayed nearby, waiting for Wednesday so the two of you could go back to your room.
You wouldnât be waiting for much longer, her mother said her goodbyes, showing Wednesday affection in a way Wednesday was comfortable with, with air kisses and turning to leave.
Wednesday paused, contemplating her choices. Finally, the need to understand, the need to be aware of potential effects it could have on you pushed her to say. "Mother," she called out, getting her mother's attention.
Her mother halted, turning around with just a subtle hint of surprise on her face. "Yes, Darling?"
"Goody told me to use the raiju," she said, she didn't want to admit it, but the choice of words and what she saw, especially after what her mother said about Goody, it just felt wrong.
Her mother sighed, a heavy, foreboding sigh Wednesday rarely heard. "Once in every generation an Addams forms a deep bond with a raiju," her mother revealed, just for a moment looking in your direction. "It can be friendship or love, many believe Goody was in love with her raiju."
Wednesday's eyes widened, and the way her heart began beating just a bit faster made her uncomfortable. "I've never heard of a raiju in our family," she argued, trying to, at the very least, remove love from the equation.
"Because there wasn't any. Despite all the times an Addams fell in love with a raiju. Those bonds always end in a tragedy, but especially when there was love involved, the raiju always died for their Addams. They are powerful, and that power makes them reckless," this time Wednesday was the one who looked at you, and as if you felt her eyes on you, you looked up and grinned at her. It made her feel nauseous for a moment.
"Her father is still alive," she tried to argue once again and for once didn't mind her mother placing a hand on her shoulder.
"Friendships sometimes ended up with raiju no longer capable of living a normal life. Maybe that's why Y/N carries her mother's last name, or maybe they broke the cycle," her mother paused for a moment. "Or perhaps you and Y/N will."
Wednesday clenched her fists. "I don't feel that way about Y/N," she claimed, even if her actions spoke otherwise. "Especially if it's tied to some kind of fate or a curse," she didn't want to feel like she wasn't in control, especially over her own emotions.
"Darling, even if it was fate, would that make those feelings any less genuine? Regardless of the nature of those feelings?" Wednesday remained silent, not quite able to put into words how she felt.
She just looked at you again. Death was never something she feared, she was even excited about it. The idea of you dying for her, however, wasn't thrilling to her. It made her feel dread and not a good kind of dread. She made a mistake, staying close to you wouldnât prevent that vision from coming true, staying away from you would prevent it. So, Wednesday made a decision, you would no longer be involved with her investigation. When she looked away from you she pretended not to see the smile on her mother's face.

LOL I literally just copy pasted it into notes bc I still had the window open when I heard he deleted it so find belowâŠ.
In the book, he is aformer gold cloak, stripped of his office for beating a woman to death.

(CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE BOOK âFIRE & BLOODâ + HOTD S2 AND S3)
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN reflects on the first two episodes of âhouse of the dragonâ s2: blood & cheese and maelor the missing.
those were terrific episodes.
âWell written, well directed, powerfully acted.â
âA great way to kick off the new season.â
âFans and critics alike seemed to agree.â
âThere was only one aspect of the episodes that drew significant criticism: the handling of Blood and Cheese, and the death of Prince Jaehaerys.â
in the book âfire & blood.â
âAegon and Helaena have three children, not two.â
âThe twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, are six years old.â
âThey have a younger brother, Maelor, who is two.â
âWhen Blood and Cheese break in on Helaena and the kids, they tell her they are debt collectors come to exact revenge for the death of Prince Lucerys: a son for a son.â
âAs Helaena has two sons, however, they demand that she choose which one should die.â
âShe resists and offers her own life instead, but the killers insist it has to be a son.â
âIf she does not name one, they will kill all three of the children.â
âTo save the life of the twins, Helaena names Maelor.â
âBut Blood kills the older boy, Jaehaerys, instead, while Cheese tells little Maelor that his mother wanted him dead (Whether the boy is old enough to understand that is not at all certain).â
âIt is a bloody, brutal scene, no doubt.â
âHow not? An innocent child is being butchered in front of his mother.â
âI still believe the scene in the book is stronger.â
âThe readers have the right of that.â
âThe two killers are crueler in the book.â
âI thought the actors who played the killers on the show were excellent ⊠but the characters are crueler, harder, and more frightening in FIRE & BLOOD.â
in the show âhouse of the dragon.â
âBlood is a gold cloak.â
âIn the book, he is a former gold cloak, stripped of his office for beating a woman to death.â
âBook! Blood is the sort of man who might think making a woman choose which of her sons should die is amusing, especially when they double down on the wanton cruelty by murdering the boy she tries to save.â
âBook! Cheese is worse too; he does not kick a dog, true, but he does not have a dog, and heâs the one who tells Maelor that his mom wants him head.â
âI would also suggest that Helaena shows more courage, more strength in the book, by offering her own own life to save her son.â
âOffering a piece of jewelry is just not the same.â
âAs I saw it, the âSophieâs Choiceâ aspect was the strongest part of the sequence, the darkest, the most visceral.â
âI hated to lose that.â
âAnd judging from the comments on line, most of the fans seemed to agree.â
on ryan condal's decision to make changes to blood and cheese.
âWhen Ryan Condal first told me what he meant to do, ages ago (back in 2022, might be).â
âI argued against it, for all these reasons.â
âI did not argue long, or with much heat, however.â
âThe change weakened the sequence, I felt, but only a bit.â
âAnd Ryan had what seemed to be practical reasons for it; they did not want to deal with casting another child, especially a two-year old toddler.â
âKids that young will inevitably slow down production, and there would be budget implications.â
âBudget was already an issue on HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, it made sense to save money wherever we could.â
âMoreover, Ryan assured me that we were not losing Prince Maelor, simply postponing him.â
âQueen Helaena could still give birth to him in season three, presumably after getting with child late in season two.â
âThat made sense to me, so I withdrew my objections and acquiesced to the change.â
âif you have never read FIRE & BLOOD, maybe it does not matter, because all i am going to âspoilâ here are things that happen in the book that may NEVER happen on the series. starting with maelor himself.â
âSometime between the initial decision to remove Maelor, a big change was made.â
âThe princeâs birth was no longer just going to be pushed back to season 3.â
âHe was never going to be born at all.â
âThe younger son of Aegon and Helaena would never appear.â
the butterfly effect.
âMaelor is a two year old toddler in FIRE & BLOOD, but like our butterfly he has an impact on the story all out of proportion to his size.â
âThe readers among you may recall that when it appears that Rhaenyra and her blacks are about to capture Kingâs Landing, Queen Alicent becomes concerned for the safety of Helaenaâs remaining children, and takes steps to save them by smuggling them out of the city.â

No Son Of Mine (One Shot)
Summary: Justice had finally been served in the wake of John's death. But with all acts of violence comes consequences, one Tommy must face when his trusted friend Johnny dogs stumbles upon the now orphaned baby of the traitor and his wife he and Arthur had both murdered in cold blood all in the name or revenge. With no child of their own and Graces refusal to send him to the orphanage, Tommy begrudgingly takes the child into his care. Will Tommy ever show young Oliver the love of a father he deserves? Or will he continue to see him as nothing but a burden the heavens had cruelly punished him with?
Warnings: Language, mentions of murder, mentions of blood, angst, fluff
Authors note: A lovely reader of mine popped into my messages and kindly asked me if I could write this story for them. I'm sorry for the long delay hun, I can only blame my procrastinating brain for my tardiness. Anyway, I hope i did your prompt justice. Enjoy!
"Right, we done?" Tommy said raising a brow as he wiped the blood that had splattered onto to his crisp white evening shirt looking to his brother Arthur nodding his head in response, his chest heaving up and down as he brushed his bloody hands through his hair, both having been sidetracked from the nights festivities.
" Fucking scum" Arthur sniffed wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as he gave one last kick to the lifeless body at his feet. A cascade of events since John's death had led up to this very day, and Tommy and Arthur both simultaneously agreed without the need of words that justice had finally been served. Luca Changretta had been dead for almost a fortnight, the vendetta was over for all but the two surviving older brothers. That was until tonight when both Arthur and Tommy were unexpectedly called away to the news that Johnny dogs had found exactly who they'd been looking for. The traitor, the informer, the bastard that had given John's address to the Italians. A Peaky Blinder, one of their very own men.
" What about her?" Arthur spat a splutter of saliva laced with blood to the ground, the result of one lucky punch from the chancer that had tried his luck with the towering gangster. He'd put up a decent fight, one Arthur enjoyed watching before his patience grew thin and he pummeled his fist into him, each snap and break of his bloody face crumbling into something unrecognizable before being shot point-blank in the head. No one wanting or willing to hold him back. Not even Tommy. No forgiveness was given that dark night, only the sweet mercy met at the end of the barrel of a gun.
" Collateral" Tommy replied as he rubbed a cigarette across his lips not giving the nights events one ounce of remorse. This was for John after all.
" Collateral?" Arthur sniffed feeling a pang of guilt hit his stomach. Women and children were not to be harmed, an unspoken agreement before time in all dealings in war between men.
" Yes Arthur, fucking collateral alright?" Tommy snapped as he marched over to his brother whose eyes hadn't left those of the lifeless woman laid on the muddied ground below him " She ran into the line of fire brother. She all but killed herself" Tommy finished growing impatient with Arthur's weighing guilt. The last thing he needed was his number one soldier to be hit with a moral compass.
" Lads, we've got ourselves a wee problem" Johnny rushed over breathless as he loosened the neckerchief from the vein pumping angrily on the side of his neck. Fuck sake, Tommy thought to himself as he threw his cigarette to the ground. Things could never go smoothly, as smoothly as murder could go that was.
" What kinda problem?" Tommy replied as he and Arthur followed him into the small bedsit from the courtyard that two dead bodies had yet to be disposed of. The commotion resulting in the curiosity and twitching of the neighbours curtains, not one of them daring to or even contemplating in the slightest to inform any person of authority. Who would they go to? The police? The mere thought was laughable.
"Just a small one" Johnny replied taking two steps at a time up the rickety wooden stairs elaborating no further on what exactly had thrown a spanner into the works.
"A small problem Johnny eh? That's a big fucking problem!" Tommy ranted shaking his head as the three men entered the flat met with the sound of a newborn baby wailing in his woven bassinet, his bottom lip wobbling with each cry that furiously left his little lungs.
"Well he's small ain't he?" Johnny replied as he tilted his head looking down at the baby boy bundled in a white knitted blanket. You'd think with the the small army of children Johnny had fathered he'd be in his element. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Johnny was a natural with children, but a natural with children that had been weened, potty trained, and able enough to drive a four wheeled vehicle and shoe a horse. In basic terms, teenagers. But nonetheless wee babbies in his eyes. Newborns were all but a loud messy mystery to him.
" Jesus fucking Christ..." Tommy huffed pinching his brow as his mind frantically tried to come up with a solution as to what in the hell he was going to do now.
" Bloody hell, bloody fucking hell!" Arthur bellowed as he kicked the chair beside him, the gravity of what they had just gone hitting him far more than any sin from the long list he had committed in the past. They had made a child an orphan, and Arthur's regret and new-found faith in the almighty was about to turn into a furious rage of self-inflicted guilt.
" Hey, hey!" Tommy said cupping Arthur's head in his hands in a vice grip, trying to snap him from the pit he was intent on falling in. " Johnny take the child and go start the car" Tommy said loosening his hands as Arthur's head cast down with shame at his sudden outburst. No reading of scriptures would ever be able to tame the raging fury from igniting within him at any given moment, no matter how hard he tried. " And Johnny, light a fire. Just as we did for John" Tommy finished reminding Arthur who this was for, who they were avenging.
" He won't quit!" Arthur panicked as he held the baby in the back seat of the car, fumbling with the hand stitched blanket as Tommy drove full speed down the country lane back to Arrow house were the night of meeting with dignitaries was surely over.
" He ain't a bloody chicken is he?" Johnny said as he reached over from the passengers seat taking the bundled up child into his arms. " Like this, look" Johnny added resting the baby's head on his shoulder as he silently prayed to every ancestor to take pity on him, promising them that the next child to be birthed with his last name he'd be the epitome of a modern father to.
" Shut him up Johnny!" Tommy shouted, his jaw clenched at the increased wailing in his ear, his nerves on edge by the constant reminder of the nights events he now had to deal with as he slammed his foot down on the pedal with Arrow house in sight.
"Grace!" Tommy's voice bellowed through the walls of the their house. Every guest had already left, the grand entrance cleared of tables of the most prestigious of all champagnes imported from France mere hours ago. A night of free food, free booze and music in return for them delving into their pockets. But with the host having been otherwise occupied for most of the evening it was a night wasted, one he would begrudgingly have to endure for a second time.
" Tommy..." Grace said as she hurried down the stairs pulling her ivory night gown around her as she watched Tommy pace back and forth with a cigarette hanging from his lips in the grand hallway.
" Here. You wanted a baby, now you have one" Tommy said as he took the child from Johnny's arms placing him into hers before storming off to his office and slamming the door shut, leaving his wife wide-eyed in confusion as Johnny and Arthur stood there sheepishly without a word.
" Frances, some warm cows milk and another blanket please. That will have to do until the morning" she said softly not wanting to startle the child anymore as she gently hushed his sobs away into small whimpers and sniffles. " One of you going to tell me what happened?"
It had been an hour, three whiskys, a packet of cigarettes and the rubbing of one's brow back and forth as a pounding headache settled onto his forehead since Tommy had shut himself away in his office, shutting himself away from the consequences of the night.
" Tommy?" Graces voice quietly announced as she entered the room with the newborn bundled in her arms soundly asleep as a flash of love at seeing his wife in her element softened her husband's face. Her motherly instincts that had been waiting to be freed finally being put to use after the longing for her own child.
" I've rung the orphanage" Tommy bluntly replied, the sweet moment that had captured him bitterly snatched away by no one else but himself as he stubbed out his cigarette. " They're coming first thing tomorrow to..."
" The orphanage. Tommy..." Grace interrupted him, her angered voice raising just above a whisper in response before being cut off herself.
" I won't hear anymore on it Grace. He can't stay here, that's the end of it" Tommy stood up throwing his lighter on a stack of paperwork as he rested his hands on the mahogany desk in front of him, looming over the list of numbers he had been calling as he huffed out a cloud of smoke.
" The end of it is it Thomas?" Grace scoffed as she walked forward, her eyes narrowing in on her husband with every step she took. " You made this child an orphan, he is your responsibility now. That's the end of it" she said coming to a stop in front of his desk as her husbands jaw tightened at her words.
" What about John's kids eh? They've been made orphans, hm? Grace? " He said as his wife turned her back on him as she headed for the door, Tommy's raised voice enough to startle a small whimper of cries from the baby boy now waking up from a deep slumber.
" When will it end Tommy?" Grace said as she came to a stop at the door. Tommy's relentless need for revenge against anyone who had dared to cross him leaving a string of orphans, elderly burying their own children and children burying their own parents. " A son Tommy, isn't that what you've wanted? What we've wanted?" she sighed, a deep wave of sorrow filling her heart as she looked down at the sweet child in her arms, a child she had yearned for during the unforgiving nights she had held onto her husband as tears streamed her face. Loss after loss breaking her already shattered heart.
" He'll be no son of mine"
Six years later...
" Elbows off Oliver" Grace reprimanded with a small smile of affection at the breakfast table to the child who had grown into a dimpled cheeked young boy as she rubbed her swollen stomach.
" Yes mummy" he replied kicking his legs back and forth as he wiped his cheeks from the egg soldiers he had just enjoyed as Tommy eyed him over the newspaper in his hand, reaching to caress his wife's stomach.
" He'll be here soon" Grace smiled to her husband lacing her fingers between his as she glanced over at her son that had no knowledge of who his birth parents were or the night that had brought him into their life, never wanting to or willing to send him into turmoil with the truth at such a young age "A baby brother for you Oliver " she winked to him as he grinned from ear to ear at the idea of having a sibling all whilst trying to stack the remaining pieces of toast into a strong hold that would keep the soldiers from the fiery dragon his imagination had conjured up. His attempts rendered futile when his tower of toast came crashing down onto the recently polished floors.
" Grace..." Tommy huffed folding his newspaper in half throwing it on the table in front of him, his patience easily tested with anything the small boy did that caused the slightest of inconvenience.
" Don't play with your food darling" she corrected him as Oliver's eyes darted to his father and the irritation clearly expressed in the creases of his furrowed brow. "Go clean up those buttery cheeks before I leave ok?" She smiled as the boy nodded in response while sliding off his seat only to stand on the scattered toast below him, causing a mountain of crumbs and further mess.
" You heard your mother" Tommy huffed lighting a cigarette as he looked down at the waste of food and the disorder that came with the child that had created it. " Oliver" Tommy pinched his brow as the little boy stood there doe eyed looking up at him nervously through his lashes.
" Go on" Grace smiled reassuring him as he ran to the door. " You're to harsh with him, he's scared of you" Grace said snapping her head to Tommy as he left the room.
" He doesn't listen" Tommy stated as he stood up taking a drag of his cigarette as he watched the boy through the crack of the door running up the stairs. " Stands there looking gormless whenever I tell him to do something, just like his traitor father"
" Tommy!" Grace said as she put the breakfast dishware down, crashing them onto the table in one loud clatter of knives, forks and spoons as she hurried to shut the door. " Don't ever let him hear you talk like that!"
" Well maybe he should know, eh Grace ?" Tommy said coldly stubbing his cigarette out, the pain from his brothers death never fully grieved, only ever making itself clear through the unfair coldness he showed to the child his wife had lovingly taken in all those years ago, raising him solely on her own over the watchful eye of him always standing from afar.
" You'd like that wouldn't you Tommy? Wouldn't have to keep up your facade anymore" Grace replied as she walked around the table. " Your his father, he knows no different. Just like this one" she said resting her hand on her stomach. " You're breaking his heart Tommy" she said taking his hand trying to reason with his stubbornness and the relentless friction he had undoubtedly created in the house the three of them shared. "I'm going to miss my train" she sighed as she closed her hand around his placing a tender kiss to his lips before turning to leave as Tommy followed behind her, watching from the door as she knelt down to Oliver in the entryway.
" Can't i come?" the young boy sobbed as she brushed his tears from his rosy cheeks. " Please?" he sniffed turning to see Tommy leaning against the door frame watching from afar, always from afar.
" I'm sorry darling, not this time" she replied a look of concern in her eyes about leaving him alone with Tommy, silently wishing this one time he would push his unenthusiastic demeanor aside and at least try if not for her then the little boy who thought the world of him. The same little boy with a determination that matched the very man who would brush off any attempts he made to impress him. Tommy's hate for the man that had fathered him clouding every parental instinct in his body. " I'll bring you something back" she winked giving him a hug before she fixed her hat and hesitantly turned to the door, leaving the young boy standing in the hallway sobbing as Tommy cruelly turned his back on his tears and shut the dinning room door behind him.
" Dad, Johnny, watch me!" Oliver shouted as he precariously placed one foot in front of the other climbing the large oak tree shading the evening sun on the grounds of Arrow house as Tommy and Johnny dogs watched on from the patio door. The young boy hell-bent on getting to the very top after seeing his uncle Arthur climb the very same tree two weeks earlier as he watched on in awe.
"That 'a boy!" Johnny shouted back pulling his cigarette from his mouth as he waved back. " Found 'em Tom" he turned to Tommy in a hushed voice as he leaned in. "They live up north in Yorkshire, factory workers in the local pressing center. Dirt poor, drunk ol' man that beats his wife within an inch of her life and too many mouths to feed" Johnny added as he watched Tommy's eyes following Oliver's every move.
" He's gonna fucking fall" Tommy huffed under his breath as he stood up straight, already on guard for the inevitable. He never fucking listens, why would he never listen to him?
" Tom, you listening ?" Johnny said as he pulled the address of Oliver's uncle from his pocket. " Grace will never forgive you Tom, he's her whole world" Johnny added as Tommy took the piece of crumpled paper from him, the decision to send Oliver to his family having been made after the unexpected news of Grace's pregnancy, a decision made solely by him without her knowledge. It's better she didn't know, better for him that was. And when the day did come, he'd tell her his family claimed him back. What grounds would she have to fight them? She'd be distracted with the birth of their son, she'd forget...wouldn't she?
"Dad look!" Oliver shouted trying to get his attention, determined to show him how far he could climb, how he was as fearless as any other Shelby before he misplaced his foot and came tumbling down to the ground.
"Oliver!" Tommy shouted throwing his cigarette into the grass as he and Johnny ran over in a panic. " What did I tell you eh?! What did I fucking tell you?!" Tommy shouted, all words of expected comfort and love absent from his voice as anger and frustration took over.
"I'm sorry..." he sobbed looking up to his dad as Tommy removed his cap from his head, running his hands through his hair as he looked down at the bloody cut on his hand, every ounce of his being telling him to cradle the boy in his arms that knew nothing but him as his father.
" Ay, up you get" Johnny said helping him as he gave him a pat to his back. " Just a scratch Oliver ay? No broken bones. Nout to worry on. Ain't that right Tommy?" Johnny said in attempts to reassure the sobbing boy and Tommy who was about ready to snap again, his jaw tightened at the sight of Oliver's cheeks streamed with tears, muddy and red from the blow of the fall.
"Get inside" Tommy said placing his cap back on as he started marching back to the house, ignoring the pit of fear in his stomach at how things could have taken a turn for the worse under his watch of the boy Grace had entrusted him with. " Boys don't cry Oliver. Soldier up and wipe those tears" Tommy harshly stated as he left him and Johnny by themselves as he made his way to his office, shutting himself once again away from any more responsibility, anymore damage his presence caused.
" Come on lad" Johnny said putting his arm around him as Oliver sniffed back his tears feeling foolish that he had not only fallen but cried In front of his father, the man that never cried.
Sitting back in his leather chair Tommy rubbed the weight of the guilt that had settled on his forehead with the tips of his fingers as the night drew in, the soft hue from the crackling fire the only source of light in the blackened room he had locked himself in for the remainder of the evening. The impending birth of his child had unexpectedly thrown Tommy's thoughts into an uncomfortable disarray. Out of sight out of mind had been Tommy's only solution to the feelings that had started to arise in him that fatherhood had threatened, that fatherhood had been threatening him with for six years. Oliver was more like him than Tommy dared to admit. The child's strong will and refusal to listen one of his own cruel making. Why couldn't he love him like he already loved his unborn child? How long could he keep this up? Would he be that man, unashamedly favoring one child in front of the other? With too many questions dominating his thoughts and his wife's gentle voice absent to soothe the demons he had created for himself, Tommy did what he only knew how to do. Drink himself to the bottom of a whisky bottle. Heading up to the second floor of Arrow house with the finest bottle of Irish whisky in his hand he stopped at the top of the stairs, small whimpers and cries coming from the room at the end of the hallway capturing his attention. Oliver's room.
" Frances!" Tommy called out as he waited for the the housekeeper to deal with what he knew he couldn't. "Fuck sake" he huffed under his breath after waiting in place for someone to come before he found himself walking down the hallway to Oliver's room. There, with his knees curled up to his chest Tommy watched though the crack of the door as Oliver rubbed his hand back and forth over the bandage wrapped tightly around his injured wrist, his small frame illuminated by the cast of the gentle moonlight shining through his bedroom window. Running his hand down his face Tommy opened the door as Oliver quickly turned around pulling the blankets up to his chin.
"Oliver?" Tommy questioned placing the bottle of whisky on the side cabinet as he walked over. " Why aren't you asleep?" Tommy said more bluntly than he intended to as he stood by the bed, feeling a wave of unease wash over him as he noted the small blanket Oliver was clutching onto. The very same blanket he was wrapped in the night they had found him. Grace had kept it, something he would have known if he had ever sat and read him a bedtime story, if he had ever woke in the night to hush the nightmares away from his worried mind, if he had ever even entered his room in all of the six years he had lived under his roof." Let me see" Tommy said in a gentler tone as he sat beside him on the bed. " Oliver let me see" he said when no response came from the whimpers the small child was trying to stifle. Boys don't cry. " Please?" Tommy sighed resting his hand on the child's back as his head fell into his other, the guilt of six year of taking the life of his parents settling on his shoulders pushing him further into his elbow digging into his leg as his head grew heavy with regret. Sniffling, Oliver turned around with his hand out as Tommy cradled it gently in his own, the difference in size causing Tommy's throat to go dry. The hate for his father's betrayal that of a grown mans doing, not this young boys that Tommy had cruelly burdened him with for six years " First of many battle wounds eh?" Tommy smiled to the young boy as Oliver's face stayed unchanged, unresponsive to Tommy trying to ease his worry. Had he done this? Made the child is his care so frightened of him he couldn't even a coax a smile from him?
" Soldiers don't cry" Oliver said pulling his hand away, his bottom lip turning down at the thought he wasn't as strong as his father, a soldier like him.
" They do Oliver" Tommy said as his brows knitted together at the thought that young Oliver had taken his words to heart. What else had Tommy said in the past six years, what else had he unknowingly taught him?
" You said boys..."
" And I shouldn't have " Tommy answered before he could finish as the boy wiped his tears from his youthful cheeks whilst a small silence filled the room, the strain from their relationship left empty with nothing further to say as Tommy desperately tried to search for the comforting words he knew Oliver needed to hear. " You want your mum don't you?" Tommy said swallowing harshly as he turned his head to the rays of moonlight cast on the wooden floor " I'm sorry Oliver, I'm..." Tommy huffed pinching his brow as he clasped his hand around the child's shoulder. "... I'm not very good at this. You gotta help me out here. Will you help me?" he said as he gently squeezed his shoulder, rubbing his thumb back and forth as the barriers Tommy had kept up started to fall around him as he desperately scrambled to gain back the wasted years he had been adored, loved unconditionally, a love he had never once reciprocated . " Get some rest" Tommy sighed patting Oliver's shoulder, his plea for help left unanswered as he stood up when a small hand grabbed hold of him.
" Tell me a story, please?" Oliver asked as he sat up in his bed looking up to the man he had always looked up to, always waiting for an ounce of affection.
" That what your mum does eh?" Tommy replied as he sat back down, adjusting the covers lovingly around the boy, if not a little overly enthusiastically as Oliver was now in a tight cocoon of covers and blankets with his arms securely fastened by his sides. " A story..." Tommy mused aloud, his eyes looking up at the ceiling as his brain mulled over all the potential tales that could see him sleeping in the guest room for an undefined amount of time if Grace ever found out, when the corners of his mouth turned up into a smile you would think had never seen the light of day let alone witnessed by anyone but himself. Arthur had made him swear in blood to never mention the day his gangly legs had gotten in his way causing him to fall from would could have been the very same tree Oliver had fell from earlier that day in attempts impress a girl three decades ago. " Arthur made me swear never to tell anyone, but you won't tell him I told you, right? Tommy said as the boy nodded his head, understanding the severity of pinky swears and the fate of death if you ever spilled.
" Cross my heart" he nodded with all the seriousness he could muster as his little face twisted into a stern expression, a worthy match to Tommy's own infamous pout. He was a Shelby after all, Tommy thought to himself as his heart suddenly filled with pride.
" That's my boy" Tommy said as he turned to sit beside him, wrapping his arm around his shoulder as Oliver nestled into his side " My son eh? Tommy nudged him into his body as the boys eyes beamed up at his father's loving gaze. "My son..."

The jedi: the flawed order that failed the chosen one
Anakin's descent into darkness in Episode 3 goes beyond his personal journey and sheds light on the similarities between Anakin and the Jedi as well as the Sith and the Jedi. Anakin's ability to intuit and foresee the future primarily manifests through his dreams, significantly influencing his subsequent actions. Similarly, the Jedi's perception and knowledge of future events set the stage for a series of plots that culminate in the climactic events of Revenge of the Sith.
Anakin's immediate regret over killing an unarmed Count Dooku and later on Mace Windu echoing the same words as Palpatine did in the beginning, justifying the murder of an unarmed enemy, highlights the skewed perception he forms of the jedi order, portraying them as power-hungry and selfish, akin to the Chancellor, as well as the biggest hypocrites when it comes to their code.
Although Anakin recognizes that Sidious is malevolent and acting out of self-interest, he ultimately places the Jedi and the Sith on the same ethical level and his personal motive of saving Padme becomes the decisive factor in his decisions, leading him down a path of darkness where he rationalizes his terrible deeds with this premise.
The Jedi's inherent distrust of Anakin from his first day stemmed from their perception that his remarkable affinity with the Force posed a potential threat to their established order. However, this initial judgment proved to be a significant mistake that will lead to their failure, especially considering their recent discovery of an active Sith presence recruiting individuals to their cause. Anakin's journey into darkness begins with a profound sense of rejection by the Jedi Order, stemming from their inability to see beyond their arbitrary requirements and fully embrace his capabilities.
Apart from Qui-Gon Jinn, who recognizes Anakin's potential, the rest of the Jedi show little faith in him, leaving him feeling isolated and unwanted. Even Obi-Wan's decision to mentor Anakin is more out of duty to his late master's final wish than a genuine connection or belief in Anakin's abilities. Both Obi-Wan and the Jedi Order fell into the same trap as Anakin did in Episode 3 regarding their perceptions of the future, ultimately fulfilling their own fears regarding him and his perceived role. Qui-Gon makes the right call in his belief that an uncertain future doesn't inherently spell doom but rather depends on the choices individuals make. This contrasts sharply with the Jedi Order's fear of the unknown, a poignant irony given their professed stoicism and obsessive rejection of human emotions.
This mindset causes them to overlook significant aspects of their new apprentice, assuming they could simply be disregarded â such as neglecting the natural bond between parent and child. They believed that by finally admitting Anakin into their ranks, they could simply train him similarly to the young children who didn't develop yet long term memory to remember their parents. However, they lacked the empathy and the compassion to address his concerns about his mother, and they never attempted to create conditions that would allow him to let go of that worry, such as freeing her and ensuring her well-being in a comfortable planet of the Republic. Despite Anakin's valuable contributions to the Jedi on Tatooine and the Naboo army in episode 1, freely offering his assistance without seeking anything in return, the only jedi who was aware they owed him a lot and showed genuine care for him and his mother died in the midst of it all.
The avoidable circumstances surrounding his mother's death result in an irreparable rift, leading Anakin to lose trust in the Jedi when faced with similar situation involving his wife and the need to divulge the true nature of their relationship.
Qui-Gon's advice to live in the present, attuned to the living Force, echoes throughout the original trilogy, notably paralleled by Yoda in Episode 5. The 20 years spent in contemplative exile prior to his meeting with Luke make Yoda acknowledge some of his own past mistakes during the Clone Wars and learn from them, proving that no matter the age, life will always provide new lessons to learn. Initially prone to projecting into the future, Yoda's prejudiced view of Anakin in Episode 1 results in a series of missteps that contribute to his own failures. In contrast, by Episode 5, Yoda adopts a similar attitude to Qui-Gon's, counseling Luke that the future remains uncertain and emphasizing the importance of self-belief, confidence and trust in the force, exemplified when he explains that Luke's inability to move his ship with the Force stems from a lack of belief in himself.

Heroes & Villains The DC Animated Universe - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
The Huntress
Helena Bertinelli was the daughter of an organized crime overboss named Franco Bertinelli. As a child, she saw her parents murdered by Steven Mandragora, a lieutenant who killed his boss so to take over the Bertinelli empire. Helena only managed to escape by hiding in a closet; yet she witnessed the whole ordeal and it scarred her for life. Â
Sublimating her desire for revenge into crimefighting, Helena went on to become the Huntress. She trained rigorously and became a world class gymnast and martial artist, capable of disarming and defeating multiple armed opponents. Her weapons of choice were a self-reloading mini-crossbow and retractable bow-staff.
The Huntress was recruited into the Justice League when the team expanded its roster following the Thanagarian invasion. Through the Leagueâs resources, Huntress was finally able to track down Steven Mandragora who had recently resurfaced and was turning stateâs witness as part of a plea deal. Â
With the aid of The Question, The Huntress was able to take Mandragora down. She had planning on killing him yet ultimately chose not when she saw that Mandragora was with his young son (a child roughly the same age Helena was when she saw her parents murdered). Although she did not go through with her deadly act, Huntress' recklessness nonetheless resulted in her being expelled from the Justice League.
Undaunted, she continued to fight crime on her own, frequently teaming up with The Question (whom Helena had become romantically involved with). When The Question was abducted by Project Cadmus, The Huntress alerted Superman and together they broke the Question free from his incarceration. The Huntress was invited to rejoin the team but declined the offer. Â
Some time later, The Huntress investigated strange behaviors on the part of Black Canary. She discovered that Canary and other female member of the League were being mind controlled and forced to fight in Rouletteâs Meta-Brawl. Huntress and Black Canary worked together to free the others and Rouletteâs operation was brought down. Â
Actress Amy Acker voiced The Huntress with the headstrong heroine first appearing in the debut episode of the first season of Justice League Unlimited, âInitiation.â Â

Imagine.
A/N: Two posts in a day? the boredom caught up to me, and the words spewed out. Some short and sweet angst to welcome season two
Warnings: Canon HOTD incest (though no mention of it really), angst, implied reader death, character death, mourning, animal cruelty (free the dragons yall), slight comfort in the beginning that just fucking disappears, no real romance in this one. brief eludes to NSFW but very brief, fem reader, reader had a baby (Visenya), spoilers
Imagine grieving with Rhaenyra. Youâre both mothers, birthed your own children. The marks of the battle shone brightly upon your bodies, widened hips and marks of stretched flesh on your once flat stomachs. You found more children in each otherâs wombs, giving each other and your other half a bigger family than just one could have produced.Â
But now, your family is lacking one child. A son, an adored little boy with brown hair and eyes, dimples, the cutest smile in all the seven kingdoms. He wasnât just a second son in your found family, he was your little boy. You may have not birthed him, or been present in the act like you were with Aegon and Viserysâs creation. But he was just as much yours as he was Rhaenyraâs or Daemons.Â
Holding her in the nights she would come back unsuccessful, no closer to finding the mangled body of your baby or his small dragon. Your arms tight around her waist, letting her face reside against your neck where you felt every sob that wracked from her body and ricocheted onto yours. No sleep would find any of you that night.
Imagine grieving with Daemon. You could never let yourself cry with your wife, needing to be strong so the queen could be strong. But your husband, normally so gruff, wrapping his arms around you late at night. Rhaenyra was asleep, her breaths even and you wonder if sheâs dreaming about Luke.Â
He whispers against your skin, letting your pieces break for the first time since the raven carried the news all the way to dragonstone. Your sobs break him more, taking pieces of his heart with every heart wrenching wail against his skin. But he takes it, knows you need this or youâll go down a dark path. His need for vengeance and repayment quelled with the watery look of your eyes. Your watered pleas for him to stay when you feel his body tense against your own breaking his resolve as he whispers a soft âof courseâ against your hair.Â
Imagine grieving with Jace. Your eldest boy looks so much like his brother itâs both a pain and a comfort all wrapped in one. Seeing him as he returned from Winterfell, your arms aching to wrap around him. And they do. You coo to him, running your fingers through his hair like you wished to do with Luke. He cried into your shoulder, broken cries of promised revenge echoing against your misery-stained skin.Â
You didnât cry then, letting your baby take off his misery and place it onto you. You had to be strong, uplift your family in the way only a mother could do. Your comforting hands brought the sweetest comfort with every touch, lulling Jace into a state that he could face his other mother.Â
You let them cry together, bonding more in their shared grief.Â
Imagine having to explain to your littlest ones that their big brother wonât be coming home. You were the only one who could sit down little Aegon, Viserys, and Visenya and try to explain the worst tragedy imaginable, a mothers worst nightmare come true. That they wonât see him for years and years, but that heâll be there waiting for them. Comforting their saddened cries, and you felt like you were drowning in sorrow.Â
Imagine comforting Rhaena as the news that her betrothed was murdered by their uncle reached the keep. Her cries hurt the worst, leaving scars that would never fade. She wasnât yours either, but in a sense she was. You felt like Laena would have wanted you to be the one to have her daughter sob on, white locs caressed by your gentle fingers until she had cried herself to sleep.
Imagine flying with Rhaenys, the cannibal under you and the red queen to the side as you fly to the battle of rookâs nest. Your heart hammering as the sight of Vhagar reached you, only strengthening the hatred filling your heart. She was the same dragon that ended your little boy, that casted misery upon your family.
And maybe it was selfish that you had flown out without permission, that you might be the next casualty in this dance of dragons and death. But you wouldnât allow yourself to die before you achieved your mission, you had to kill Aemond first. Even if the kinslayer took you with him.
And imagine the brief euphoria you feel, dragons crashing to the ground too fast to stop. You see the usurper jump from his golden dragon, as do you. Only you land on Vhagar, dagger in Aemondâs throat. You make sure he sees you, the second mother of the nephew he killed as the last of his life leaves his body. And as the dragons crashed to the ground, making you and the now dead prince Aemond meet the ground hard enough to crack ribs, dragons screeching filling your ears, you couldn't find an any more perfect revenge.Â
